Any time! My favorite (at the moment, anyway) is the Dopeler effect, but I like sarchasm and foreploy, too.

Being a reader of the Washinton Post, I did a double-take when I saw you mention the Wordsmith. Some of the suggestions over the years have been so amazingly clever; at times I wish I had the cleverness of mind to do it. I saw your LJ through Pumagrrl's and liked the icon.

Welcome! Glad you commented. If you like Wordsmith, you should also try Will Shortz's show on NPR (also available as a podcast). He comes up with a word puzzle each week for the general audience, and those who solve it correctly enter a lottery for the honor of appearing on the show. The lucky winner gets to play word games with him for half an hour. There are some really impressive people on the show, but there are some pretty ordinary people too!

Neither do I, but you only need to download iTunes, which is free.

They have a round of these in one of the BBC Radio 3 quiz programmes, I think - which tend to come on just as you're pottering around the kitchen thinking about what to cook for dinner. A fine accompaniment.

I always think it'd be fun to use them in conversation, then reconsider and decide it'd be just too smart-aleck. Pointless debate, anyway, since I'd never actually remember them in time to use them...

The only word of this nature that I've been able to use is "frenemy" - a person who pretends to be your friend while secretly plotting your downfall.

Glad you enjoyed them! I'm always hoping to see more clever things like this, but alas, they're few and far between.
