I had a fresh lychee in Chinatown in New York just a few weeks ago. I could say lots about the texture - crunchy hard sheel that you have to peel off, the fruit beneath it felt (to me) like an eyeball or something - rather squishy. But the flavor is just pure sweetness, to me.
Lychees are strange things. Sometimes they are referred to as nuts, probably because of their hard, stubbly shell-like peel, but they are indeed fruits. They look like large, color-leached grapes; I'd been struggling to describe the texture, but kcobweb hit it spot-on with "eyeball". They are especially awesome chilled. In Miami, you can sometimes find them as a flavor of sorbet or, at a particularly wonderful fruit stand we sometimes visit, milkshake.
I dream about a white city on an island surrounded by blue water - I think there was a poster of Crete in my grandfather's tailor shop when I was very small and I dream about that city but with more windy streets and taller towers and minarets and onion domes.
I think you and I probably have very similar work styles.
I love that you were a precocious gamer. I only know about lychees from Top Chef S2, where one of the cheftestants walked out of the store without paying for lychees, thus spawning "Lycheegate." And I, also, am a disorganized non-finisher.

I have never had a lychee. Now I"m curious. Can you compare them to anything?

I loved the D&D thing too. :)

Lychees used to be available at the oriental buffet, but they may not have them any more.
