‘I should have known I’d find you here.’ The comment was light-hearted and the Doctor laughed. ‘You’re getting predictable in your old age.’
Jack turned, an eyebrow raised. ‘You can talk,’ he responded.
With a nonchalant shrug, the Doctor dismissed the comment and joined the Captain at the cliff’s edge, peering down into the ravine below. He couldn’t see the bottom, no matter how hard he tried. If you fell, there would be no coming back from it.
‘Cute.’
The Doctor blinked, Jack’s remark coming out of nowhere. ‘What?’ he questioned.
‘You.’ Jack smiled. ‘Gangly legs and all.’
‘Would you ever really care what I looked like, Jack?’
His smile widening, Jack turned his head so he could look at the Doctor face-to-face. ‘Probably not,’ he answered, confirming the Doctor’s suspicions. ‘But you have to admit...’ He trailed off; they both knew there was no need for it to be said.
With a chuckle, the Doctor kicked at a stray pebble, watching as it fell.
‘I’ve been looking for you.’
‘Aren’t you always?’
They shared a brief smile, and then the Doctor reached out to place a hand lightly to Jack’s arm, gripping his greatcoat gently.
‘This time I’m asking,’ Jack started softly. ‘Can I come with you?’
The Doctor nodded, making it simple. ‘Forever’s an awful long time to be alone, I could do with the company.’
