After retiring Apolo takes up doing potentially dangerous things for the adrenal rush he is no longer getting from skating. Like sky diving, driving way to fast, drag racing, whatever you want as risky as you want. Boyfriend J.R. can't handled the stress of worrying. After a close call that puts Apolo in the hospital but not seriously injured J.R. starts flinching/minor panicing everyt ime the phone rings and Apolo isn't home, or when his cell rings and Apolo isn't with him.

I want the above and then they eventually manage to fix things.

I've been trying to work on something for it since it first showed up in the first post, but have hit a huge block. I'm trying to work my way through it, but I don't know how long it'll take. :(

I only have the last part to finish up, so I figured I'd start posting this. I don't know if it quite turned out how you wanted, so if it didn't, I apologize.

****

This is the part he didn't mean to happen: he's not gonna lie, landing himself in the hospital was never his intention. It's just, well, he didn't realize how boring retirement would be until he actually was retired, and by that point it was way too late because he wasn't going to be one of those douches who announces he's going to retire and then comes back three months later. He has a bit more pride and respect for himself and his sport than that, thanks. And even then, it wasn't something that came right away, instead creeping up insidiously like some creeping, insidious thing: it was only after criss-crossing the country who knows how many times in the span of a few months, promoting himself, speaking to kids, getting way less sleep than he should be, that he realized, after finally getting a week of having nothing big on his plate and copious amounts of free time he' ( ... )

This is the part he hates: sitting beside the hospital bed and listening to the beeping of machines all around him. The chatter of the nurses at their station just outside the door, the passing of the dinner trolleys, the way his head felt light for an instant when he stepped out of the elevator to this floor because, fuck, oxygen. He hates the paparazzi loitering in the waiting area pretending that they're not paparazzi so they won't get kicked out, hates that the celebrity and sports blogs are already talking about this, hates how someone's already interviewed "concerned friends" about how much America's greatest Winter Olympian has a death wish and that TMZ's run with it. He hates everything about this, and it's worse than his own stay in the hospital, when he'd sliced his leg during Olympic trials, because then he'd only been worrying about himself and his career. This time, it's Apolo on that bed and that's something entirely different. He doesn't care if their injuries are nothing comparable, that Apolo's stay is only overnight ( ... )

This is the part where Apolo Anton Ohno is not having a mid-life crisis, fuck you, JR Celski: all right, he admits it, driving really fast wasn't exactly the smartest thing he's ever done, and he's more grateful than he can say that he didn't hurt anyone else when he crashed. He tweets as much as soon as he gets out of the hospital, and his people have him do some shows not long after to reaffirm his all-American, stand-up guy image. But after, he's home again with too much free time on his hands and JR's back in Berkeley for the rest of spring semester so he doesn't even have that and boredom starts to set in even quicker than before.

The thing to do, Apolo finally decides, is to find a new hobby.

This is the part where it gets worse: Apolo's moved on to sky diving, because everyone from Yuki on down's banned him from driving his car past the speed limit and, somehow, sky diving is a good replacement for that what the fuck. Apolo's still doing tandem but he's moving on to going down on his own soon, and now JR has visions of Apolo falling to his death whenever he closes his eyes and sometimes he wakes up with that feeling you get after you dream that you're just about to hit the ground after a long, long fall. He's never had much of a problem with heights before, but last weekend, when he'd gone to Great America with some friends, he couldn't even look at the Drop Tower without feeling queasy. And he knows it's ridiculous, because, seriously, what the hell are the chances of a parachute failing to open? He's really, honestly not gonna Google that, he doesn't care how much he gets the urge, because there's obsessive and then there's just plain sad and he hasn't crossed that line yet.

About to get on a plane and skydive for the ( ... )
