I have made a commitment to update my LJ once a week. I have also committed to being honest here. Not that I have lied before; simply that I've omitted that which might sadden/offend/upset anyone. But from now on, it will be honesty ( Read more... )

Walgreens still lists Primatene mist as being sold in store, and it is over the counter. I do know you have to ask the pharmacist for it, but you shouldnt need a prescription.

How strange. Thanks. I asked at a Walgreen's. I asked the pharmacist and they said it was recently banned as an OTC drug. I will check a different store.

I've never used one of those before. It is ironic when i feel my symptoms are bad enough to finally use one, it is banned. LOL NP, I will give up my breathing comfort for the environment. rawr

country doctor is reasonably priced if you don't have insurance, and they're good about such things.

weird. they took me the other day without realizing i was a repeat patient. i think one hint might be to go through their on-call nursing service.

I found some reports in the medical literature about a Chinese formulation called ASHMI that is supposed to produce measurable results-not as good as prednisone but better than nothing. (rwx, have you heard of this?) There's a commercial product called Phytocort that contains the relevant ingredients, and an article on the same site about the author's experiences with the product. It's not cheap (the list price on Amazon is $45 for 120 capsules) and I am, to be honest, very leery of alternative therapies in general, but this one at least seems to have undergone some study. Everything else I did a medical literature search on reported no measurable effects.

If you know anyone else with asthma it might be worth asking if any of them have taken this and what the results were.

Although looking at the details, that's less "alternative medicine" than "this is what everyone in china with asthma takes" making it more on the class of aspirin there. i haven't seen anything about it, but i don't have asthma.

I think the "alternative medicine" designation is mostly coming from the U.S. side (though I got the impression that the doctor who first trialed it here is Chinese). Thanks.

Awe! So nice to be posting more. It is just a bit hard for me since I trouble opening up and most of my news seems to be bad lately! But, I am making an effort to share it all; good AND bad. :) Love you sweetness!

My sister uses ginger. She eats it raw, I think, and the Chinese restaurant gave her some that was soaked in sugar water. She said it was effective and tasted great.
