noms de plume

Jan 06, 2006 21:21

One of those suppressed memories from middle school must have bubbled up the other day when I was trying to think of a good nom de plume (or is it "nome" with an "e?"). At least I think it was in middle school that I first heard the theory of "porn names." For obvious reasons, the women who "star" in pornographic films want to remain anonymous. ( Read more... )

I know the system allows for odd anomalies (you are certainly right about the White Stripes' place on the list), but I am still really surprised that The Decemberists did not make it on the list ( ... )

The CDReviews list this year was pretty good all in all. But not as good as I had hoped. As you may know, we tried out a new system this year that was deficient in a couple of ways. First, most of the writers were not allocated enough points. This resulted in there being lots and lots of ties, which were arbitrarily broken by the editors (Joel, myself, and Seth Steiling). Second, it resulted in the list being made up of CDs that one or two writers REALLY loved, at the expense of more diversity. Only two or three people, for example, voted for Neil Young and Foo Fighters, but they ended up being numbers 3 and 5 on the list, because those two people both allocated a lot of points to them. Seth and James Vella, on the other hand, spread their votes more thinly, and their tastes ended up not being as well-represented. We learned some lessons for next year, I suppose ( ... )

It's Damian Marley. A lot of critics thought his new album and especially the song "Welcome to Jamrock" was really good, but it didn't do anything for me. Seems like Reggae might be making a bit of a resurgence, what with Sinead O'Connor converting to Rastafarianism and all.

I like calling you Jonathon. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Frank is just not as cool as Jonathon. I think a simpler, less identity-imperiling solution is simply to include your middle initial in your nom de plume, e.g. like Morgan Freeman versus Morgan J. Freeman. Nobody Googles "Jonathon F. Winters" looking for an affable old comedian. If that's slightly too stodgy, maybe "J.F. Winters"? There's an alluring hint of mystery in the double initials, eh?

(It's not too late to change!)
