Poll Which One Day to Attend? So, I'm torn as to which Aralis One Day event I should attend. We are only allowed to go to one of them since they happen around the same time IG. The first one which is geared towards the asian half of the game is more appropriate for my character based on hints that were given in the teaser that it might involve aspects of the founder of her ( Read more... )

I honestly think you'll have more fun at the game that has your friends at it. But I have to admit, that part of my vote was a desire to play with you.

This might be going out on a limb, but... I realize the Company don't like the Garandi very much. But given their involvement with the Lucky 7, is there any chance that some/all may be willing to go with you on the Garandi one-day?

Unfortunately, a good number of our group have OOG conflicts for the first event. We were rooting pretty hard for the non-Garandi event to be the second one so we could actually attend it together.

(I'm free for both, but don't really want to go to the Garandi event as Fathom, especially without the rest of the Company.)

I would say go to the one with your friends and have faith that the Aralis staff won't cut you out of plot that your character has a big conneciton to/investment in?

But I'm not familliar with the specifics of any of it, so take that with a grain of salt!

If you play Aralis for the plotlines, fo to that one. If you play Aralis primarily to hang out with friends, then go to that one. Now, it's my guess you do it for both, but usually people play a given LARP for one reason more than the other even if both are present so go with that.

As an example, I play Madrigal for the plotlines primarily. Now, I doubt I'd play it without it having my friends, my wife, etc, but it's not my "chilling out with my peeps" LARP. Endgame, on the contrary, is wher eI hang out with friends and then do some plot (which is very good and engaging, to be clear).

It would be really hard for me to justify voting for the event that you'd be flying solo at. As a PC or an NPC, my most miserable events of any game tend to be ones where I have no character interactions, so playing at an event where I would be little more than a silent fighter would really annoy me.

I think that the point of this and any game is to have fun, and it really sounds to me as if you know which event you will have more fun at.

I'd say go to the one you actually want to go to. If there happens to be stuff that is germane to your character's interests at the one you don't go to, please to be having faith that we the staff will ensure that you won't be cut out of it for all time after.

So, I think part of the problem is that M actually wants to go to both, for different reasons. She plays Kaia because that character is interesting to her, with interesting concerns and plots; she's being made to choose between her interest in her character and her interest in playing with her friends. The character interests aren't secondary, because they're the choices she's made about what she wants out of the game.

If what makes playing a game a really magical or inspiring experience is having a confluence of certain factors, having those factors become mutually exclusive makes for a frustrating choice - moreso if you're made to choose between them. From a staff viewpoint this may not be a difficult choice, of course. Y'all know what's going on. But the idea of, "Oh, you'll have fun at either." is not actually very useful from a PC perspective, because there isn't that guarantee when the opportunity cost is unclear.

"moreso if you're made to choose between them." By which I mean that sometimes it's easier to just be told what your setup is, because then it's easier to trust that the problem is taken into account by someone with the power to do something about it. Erg. Bad writing.
