I really just had the most wonderful birthday this year. The actual day had some ups and downs like any day. Cotton had her teeth cleaned which is always a bit nerve wracking because when animals get their teeth cleaned, they put them under full anesthesia which come with possible complications, especially for an older animal. However, Cotton came through like a champ and it turns out that it was a good call to get her teeth cleaned. Her breath had become extremely foul about 4 to 6 months ago and we didn't think a whole lot about it. While they were cleaning her teeth, they found that a back molar had been cracked and was very infected. The tooth was extracted and the good news is that the roots of the tooth were still healthy, so the infection had not traveled into her system. Sadly, that did leave Cotton sore for a couple of days, but that is much better than the alternative! And she is now back to her happy self, so it's all good. She might even forgive us some day. ;-) I had lunch at my favorite Thai restaurant, Thai Star, with my husband, my sister, and youngest nephew. Sadly, Reid was not interested in strange thai food and was quite active. That being said, I have a lovely time with some fantastic food. After lunch, I had to babysit Reid while my sister got her crown fixed. It was quite the day of teeth! Of course, I also had to work, so that mostly meant putting Reid in front of the television and every so often, he'd come and ask me when his Mommy was coming back. We had originally hoped to go to my favorite Italian restaurant, Guido's, for dinner, but they were closed on Tuesdays, so we substituted our favorite sushi restaurant, Haruki's. That's probably for the best since I didn't want to leave Cotton alone too long that evening. So, my day was lowkey, but full of good food! We left the true celebration for the weekend.
On Friday, we saw True Grit which, while I enjoyed, I would likely not see again. It was a bit too bloody for me, but the acting was superb. On Saturday morning, I got to do one of my favorite errands - going to the Farmer's Market! I got some lovely kale, lettuce, potatoes, and carrots. If only I had planned to eat at home the next couple evenings, I'm sure I would have bought a lot more. And then, it was suddenly time to head off into adventure! Six years ago or so, a friend of mine was attending the Harvard Business School. As a final project, they had to create a business plan and a friend of hers had an idea to create an interactive adventure. Myself and many others filled out a survey to help this person come up with ideas and after they graduated, they created 5 Wits. Their first venture was Tomb which was an Egyptian themed adventure with hints of Indiana Jones. It was great fun and I had a number of people join me on it when I returned from my time in New Zealand. Fast forward to 2010 and they had created a new adventure called Espionage. I thought it would be entirely appropriate to bring a group through for my birthday celebration. And it was A LOT of fun. We got to avoid laser beams, solve puzzles, climb through duct work, and much more. Everyone bought into the storyline and we emerged successful! From there, we walked across the way to Tastings Wine Bar and Bistro for dinner. Great company, great food, great wine - what more could I ask for? I had mussels, duck, and pain perdu and enjoyed each a great deal. We talked and laughed and enjoyed for more than three hours and it was perfect. As we finished our dinner, the snow had started to fall and I drove home in a winter wonderland. It was absolutely delightful and I slept the sleep of the righteous.
On Sunday, I headed up to Boston with my sister's family minus the youngest and my husband to see Cirque du Soleil's Dralion. I had gotten the tickets for sister's family for their Christmas present. We almost didn't make it on time due to getting a bit lost in Boston and then some insane traffic close to the Arena. However, we got in just as the show started and we had fabulous seats. We were in the front row of the stadium seating and were close enough to see the actor's expressions. Dralion was much better this time around than the first time I saw it - probably six years ago. The cohesiveness was much better and there were only a couple mistakes that were barely noticeable. Also, the stage was incredibly impressive which led to a great deal of that cohesiveness. My favorite act was the rope flying, but that's always my favorite because how can you make that look so easy? There was also a great trapeze act and the perennial favorite of trampoline work. It was a great few hours, that's for sure. My sister's eldest, Stuart, enjoyed it and talked about it the whole way home. Her middle child, Eliot, was less enthused and when asked if he'd ever want to see something like that again, he said no. Ah well, I guess you can't please everyone, although that greatly disappointed me. Regardless, I try not to let that get me down, because everything else was just absolutely perfect.
Sadly, it is now Monday and the work week begins again. Will I travel to the mid-Atlantic for work on Wednesday or will the snow keep me home? No one knows!
EDIT: Da Boss told me to reschedule the trip. Woo hoo! I gets to be home all week. :-)
