Ooh, this has got me very intrigued! Hopefully I will join once I actually get around to watching the show. See, I have been wanting to watch it for a while now, but I never really got around to it. What do you think...should I go for it? :D Oh, and I've heard the books are good too. What's your opinion on them, especially compared to the show?
Go for it! In all honesty, it's my favorite show ever and I'm dying until the second season starts. I only read the first book so far, because I watched the first season first so I'll read each book after each season. And the books are equally great, I find that they make it easier to understand each character, because each chapter is from a certain character's POV, so I ended up loving characters I didn't like much on the show. But the series does manage to follow the book pretty close. There are, obviously, some things missing but they're little things. I think the only major change is the characters' age: some of them are 13 and 14 in the books, and about more than 18 on the show (but trust me, it was necessary or it would never have been made and it doesn't really affect the plot either)
Alright, thank you so much for such a detailed and informative recommendation! (: May I also ask what genre the show falls under? From what I understand, and please correct me if I'm wrong, it's fantasy and adventure, with some historical background? Also, what would you say your favorite aspect of the show is?
It's... really hard to define it, for me, to be honest. It is fantasy/adventure, and it's not historical as... it has history from our world, it's more about the way they deal things? I don't know if it makes much sense. It's fantasy and adventure, but it feels like you are watching/reading something historical as well xD
It's really hard to set apart my favorite things from the book and from the show. I think, for both, the characters are amazingly written and portrayed, as well as the plot itself. Basically, it always makes you feel on the tip of your toes, not exactly expecting what will happen next. I don't think one should only read the books or only watch the show, I think they both complement each other very well? The show has this amaaaaazing soundtrack and visuals of the actual city and places, it's just stunning, which you can imagine while reading the books, but actually seeing it it's a whole different thing!
