The engagement party was spectacular.
Sirius hadn’t expected any less. The large ballroom was decorated in black and white, and as indicated on the elegant invitations, it was compulsory for all guests to wear one of the two neutral shades. There was only one spec of colour in the entire room - Narcissa’s brilliant blood-red robes.
Watching her from the corner of his eye, Sirius snagged a glass of champagne from the tray a passing waiter carried and started across the room towards the vision in red.
He slipped in behind Narcissa and touched her elbow gently. “Can I speak to you?”
Narcissa looked over her shoulder, her eyes catching Sirius’s and quickly darting away. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Please,” Sirius murmured, very aware that there were ears everywhere. “Five minutes.”
Narcissa hesitated and gently pushed back a stray wisp of her hair and nodding. “Fine. Five minutes.”
He led her to a deserted alcove and guided her inside, successfully hiding them both from the view of hundreds of guests. Safely in the shadows, Sirius ran his eyes lingeringly over Narcissa’s form like he had been desperate to all evening. “I can’t decide if your robes signify love and passion or a lamb being sent to slaughter.”
“That’s enough.” Narcissa lifted her chin, “I don’t have time for your silly games.”
“They aren’t games.” Sirius stepped forward, holding her eyes seriously. “Don’t marry him, Narcissa,” he whispered.
She sighed. “Sirius-”
“Don’t marry him,” Sirius repeated. He cupped Narcissa’s lovely face gently between his hands. “He won’t make you happy.”
“And I suppose you will?”
Sirius caught his bottom lip between his teeth and hesitated.
Narcissa wrapped her fingers gently around Sirius’ wrists. “You need to stop this. I’m with Lucius now. I’m going to marry him. There’s nothing you can do about it.”
“Do you love him?”
She sighed. “No.”
“Do you love me?
“Sirius-”
“Answer the question.”
“Yes.”
Sirius smiled softly, thumbs tracing her cheeks. “That’s enough,” he murmured softly. “That’s enough for me.”
