AUTHORS NOTE: Written for the Drabble Challenge at Jonas Drabbles the prompt was gorgeous.

There was a dark mark on the ceiling.

It wasn’t instantly noticeable, but after you had been staring for a while it started to stand out like red wine on a white tablecloth.

I knew exactly what made the mark, because I had been lying here in the exact same position when Joe decided it would be a great idea to chuck a tennis ball at every surface in the room to see how many would bounce the ball back into his hand. It was quickly established the ceiling was our best bet so we lay there chucking the ball back and forth for hours whilst my ipod played on shuffle in the background.

We did stupid stuff like that. He’d have a couple of days off, so we’d lock ourselves away and lay around watching shitty television and inventing random little games that would have us rolling around on the ground in laughter. Things were good in those moments. Simple, easy, fun.

But they weren’t always good, because he always had places to go and people to see. And somehow, I always ended up in second place.

I pointed to the mark on the ceiling, “Remember that day?”

From beside me Joe smiled, “vividly.”

I lowered my arm and hesitated before murmuring, “I think we should break up.”

A pause. And then, “I know.”

This was the moment that most people dread. But for me, the articulation of those six words was like a breath of fresh air - because as gorgeous as we were when we were together, those six little words were the start of something beautiful.
