personally, i agree that the 'sea change' shift that this article talks about is just an extension of middle america's long-standing indifference/ignorance towards politics, but with a scared-shitless kneejerk need to feel 'secure'. "nationalist hysteria, religious extremism, and anti-foreign xenophobia" are all things we're trying to fight in the middle east and elsewhere, but we're breeding it here.
