Something with just one generalized effect. At least then it's easier to narrow down what the situation is. Unless it involves a mental compromise, of course.

Such as it is, experiments will happen when they happen. It takes the more serious ones to get people to take them seriously, anyway.

By the sound of it the Shifts usually aren't as bad as the personal abductions though. Or am I reading too much into it?

No, you're correct in that thought. The abductions after all, seem to be more brutal in their nature. They aren't all the time, but the ones that are can be very extreme.

Exactly. Besides, we're not exactly tortured in the village, given how widespread the shifts are. The individual tests allow them to be more invasive.
