Ball Point Pens

We were having a discussion at work about how a ball point pen works.. I know there is a ball involved but I was wondering how the ball doesn't get pushed into the ink... Everyone wanted to make up an answer but no one could give me facts... Keegan found this pic from the Encyclopedia Britannica site.
