[Background]
Once, Kohane had a happy family, with her father and mother, the latter of which who told her that as long as they wished hard enough, they would stay happy forever. Unfortunately, this didn't come true.
When Kohane was young, she saw the spirit of a woman beside her father, revealing that he was having an affair with that woman. Upon realizing this, her mother and father constantly argued until one day they split up. Determined to upstage him, her mother used Kohane's abilities as a spirit medium to gain fame. As time passed on, her obsession swallowed her up. She refused to touch Kohane, or let Kohane touch anything impure, go to school, interact with others, etc., to the point where she saw only the spirit medium in Kohane. Kohane's life consisted mostly of performing exorcisms or going on TV broadcasts about spirit mediums.
This changed when she met Kimihiro Watanuki, another person who could see spirits. The two became fast friends, as he was the first person in a long time to treat her with any affection. Sadly, Kohane's fame was rising--in a bad way. Because her abilities were more powerful than other spirit mediums and thus she could see what they couldn't, she was accused of being a fraud. As a result, her house was vandalized, she received threats through the phone, and she was at one point pushed down the stairs. Once, when she was asked to locate a woman but couldn't, the woman's mother began beating her and no one intervened.
As time passed on, though, and as Kohane and Watanuki's friendship developed, she began gaining the strength to stand up to her mother. Finally, she decided to end thigs once and for all at a seance, where her mother told her to give the people whatever they wanted, even if it was a lie. Remembering how she once told Kohane not to lie, Kohane realized that now was the time.
She gave the correct answer--and the one contradicting the other medium's. Of course, people accused her of being a fraud, before the client knocked her off her chair. At that point, Kohane remarked that she was just doing what she was told, and then proceeded to tell the client the truth: the client herself murdered the man whom she was "asking" about. She then revealed to everyone else the nature of her relationship with her mother, invoking everyone's sympathy for her, despite the fact that they'd been treating her poorly not long ago. Completely furious by now, Kohane's mother struck her.
This was when Watanuki and his friend Doumeki entered the scene, helping Kohane. Afterwards, her mother was taken to a hospital, due to her spiraling mental health, while Kohane was taken to Yuuko Ichihara's shop of wishes. There, she told Watanuki a bit about her past, before crying into his chest, as things were finally over. Later on, she talked to Yuuko, making her wish: she'd give up her powers so that no one would talk or write about her mother. However, her price was too much, so Yuuko added any rumours about Kohane as well.
Deciding that she shouldn't live with her mother for a while, which Kohane agreed to, Yuuko had her a friend--a fortune-teller--take her in. It took some convincing, but Kohane's mother let Kohane go.
[Personality]
To most people, Kohane seems emotionless. She is indeed very passive and somewhat quiet--when she shows emotions, it tends to be mildly, though she is gradually breaking out of that shell. This is the result of years of emotional abuse, as before she met Watanuki, she'd forgotten what it was like to be happy. Her time on television has only strengthened this, with everyone criticizing her. Were she not like this, she would've fallen apart long ago. To those people, though, she is not necessarily submissive as she is to her mother--while she won't stand up for herself, she will not change what she says to please them. She is bluntly honest, likely thanks to her mother as well, who told her to never lie to her. She's not especially concerned about what strangers think of her.
Despite her stoic nature, Kohane cares about others more than she does herself, particularly where her mother is involved. While it may not seem like her mother and her are close (and they aren't, really), Kohane still lives for her and knows it. Her greatest goal for the last half of her life was to help her mother, and that still hasn't changed--only the methods have. Kohane is seeking happiness for herself, but her motivation behind that is for her mother to realize how to find happiness. However, in the case of her mother, she is willing to be cold. Again, as devoted to her mother as Kohane is, their relationship isn't what you'd call "close."
Kohane's more basic forms of kindness shows in her friends. Around them, she is the sweet girl that she truly is inside, never wanting to cause problems for them. Was it a problem that she had the umbrella? Is it okay for her to be eating a meal meant for someone else? Is it okay for her to have the good-luck balloon instead of Watanuki? And so on and so forth. Simple gifts and acts of affection mean a lot to her, and it's very easy to make her happy. An unremarkable moment can make her smile, if only because the light-hearted, normal atmosphere is something she isn't used to.
Ultimately, she's a strong-willed person, even if she won't defend herself. She's been waiting for years for her mother to open her eyes, and during that entire time, she's been trying to protect her. Essentially, she's the kind of person who didn't cry until the end, at which point nobody could blame her.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Yuuko didn't take Kohane's spirit medium powers, meaning she can still sense the presence of spirits (and possibly people in general, given that she could tell her mother entered the house in one scene) and anything supernatural, really. In a way, she can read people. For example, she can see that Watanuki made a pinky-promise with someone, but she can't tell who. She also notices right away that Watanuki can see spirits like her but that he's different from her somehow (which she later pinpoints to him not being alone whereas she was). Additionally, she knows that Watanuki and Doumeki (whose pure aura she can sense) are sharing an eye and are "blending" together, and could tell that one of the spirits she exorcised once met Watanuki.
However, she has lost the ability to exorcise spirits, as that came from a magical item within her.
[Affection] Kohane isn't used to being hugged or touched affectionately, to say the least. That doesn't mean she doesn't like it though, so feel free to hug her or whatever.
[Fighting] Killing, not without permission. As for fighting... you're free to try, since Kohane can't exactly defend herself.
[Other Permissions] Telepathy is fine, though I'd rather the fourth wall not be broken.
[Other Facts] She remembers her previous stay in Somarium.
