Eden's a light sleeper, so when she hears someone opening the door when it's still so late - or early - that the light has yet to filter in through the windows, she wakes up. It takes her a moment, heart pounding, to remember Claire went to a party, that she's yet to hear her come home ( Read more... )

Swaying from side to side and occasionally spinning in a wide circle, Claire's not able to keep her mind on very much as she heads back to the hut she shares with Eden, her cheeks a rosy pink that has very little to do with the brisk air outside and everything to do with the alcohol that's still running through her veins and the not entirely unpleasant thud of her temples. When Eden calls out, she finally blinks and starts to head in a relatively straight line with an entirely overwhelmed look on her face, eyes wide and blinking.

"Eden, I... am having a very hard time putting words together," she nods, pursing her lips and humming lightly under her breath. Katy Perry might not have released "I Kissed a Girl" yet back when she's from, but the radio knows no such limits.

There are a limited number of reasons for this kind of behavior, something Eden never really thought about dealing with Claire - not because it isn't something Claire might do, but simply because it never occurred to her. Every month, she quietly and discreetly attends the island's support meetings, grateful for it in those times when she feels like slipping (the more people leave her, the more often she feels the pull). She doesn't have a problem with any of it; it just isn't for her anymore and she hardly thinks of it outside of that context.

So when Claire walks up swaying, she isn't sure if she should laugh or be appalled, knowing only that Bennet never prepared her for this (Bennet would kill her, oh god, for letting this happen).

"Are you now?" she asks wryly. "It looks like you're having a hard time putting your feet in front of each other in the right order, too."

"Mmm," Claire considers, staring down at her feet, the change in the position of her head sending the world whirling around her again. Yes, she's having trouble making her feet behave, but it's not just her feet, it's the rest of her as well. She even starts wondering exactly how it is that she's gotten to that point, and that's when she remembers steam rising into the air, as well as a constant rocking back and forth. "I think I rode on the train too long. That tiny train outside? I took that a couple of times around the tracks; it's sooooo pretty out there, Eden."

Intent on making it over to Eden's wide eyes, Claire straightens her shoulders and takes steps one at a time until she's standing by the doorway, feeling very fortunate that she's now able to throw a hand out to grip the bamboo there.

"Also," she adds, raising a finger. "I kissed two people. I feel funny. I think I've had a few too many brownies."

Eden reaches out to steady her, brow raising a little as she peers at her. She's not sure if she should be worried about that or not. It's not behavior she wants to encourage, that's certain, but Claire's a good girl and she isn't showing any signs of being in serious trouble right now, just... kind of wasted. (Actually, riding the train at night doesn't sound half-bad, though it's probably a hundred times better for being in Claire's current condition.)

Leading her carefully inside, she nods. "Well, that... seems very possible," she says. "Why don't you come lie down for a little while and tell me about it?"
