It was probably a sad reflection of the state of things that Eden had been looking forward to this trip from the moment her ankle had finally seemed healed. Life on the island had its perks and there was no doubting it was better than her fate back home would have been, namely in that she got to keep going at all, but it was either dull or ( Read more... )

Against doctor's suggestion, Alec's been going without his sling for days. It's still habit to half cradle the arm against his side though and he grabs his own bag with his right hand, hitches it over his shoulder and flashes Eden a quick, bright smile.

"Ready as I'm gonna be," he says, but his voice is light, quietly eager. He nods down the expanse of beach with a jut of his chin and then squints at her again. "Guess we can just walk, right? See where it takes us."

"Probably the best way to start." Eden's teeth catch on her lower lip as she nods, setting out to do just that. There's no point in taking time to figure out which way to go or where to start. They have a while and it's a whole new place to explore. Heading down the shore, she looks inland. "I haven't been off that island in over a year, my god," she says, shaking her head. "More jungle, but at least it's different jungle."

With a decisive nod, Alec starts heading inward, toward the trees that really look exactly like the trees on the other island. In fact, if he hadn't been paying attention while they'd been on the boat, Alec could nearly believe they'd only landed on another part of the same island.

"When'd they find out about this one?" he asks, glancing over his sore shoulder at Eden as he walks. He knows it has to have been fairly recently given that it isn't quite as inhabited as the other.

"About three months ago." Why she hasn't come over sooner, Eden isn't sure, except that she hadn't wanted to go alone. Her brief stint with the Company had mostly seen her working solo, but she'd had a power on her side then. Here, she knows all she's really got is quick thinking and a gun that brings up bad memories. As unlikely as it seems that anything serious will occur to them that hasn't already got any of the other explorers who've been out here, she's not taking chances. She's not quite that reckless. "The Dawn Treader passed by and it wasn't here, and the next time they came around, here it was. A little creepy, but interesting."
