Twenty Wishes Granted -- Video

A long time ago [ a 'long time' being nine months ] I asked what Mama's an' Papa's are 'sposed to be like, an' a lot of people said they were supposed to be nice and talk nice an' everythin'. Since there's lots of new people an' it's been a while, I thought I'd ask again!

What are Mama's and Papa's 'sposed to be like?

[ Who is this child? ]

Mothers and fathers can be the most wonderful people in the entire world. [ She misses hers. There is a pang now. ] They aren't always perfectly kind, but they can't be. They do love their children, but sometimes children need a firmer hand - to be given what they need, not always what they want.

But if they love their kids shouldn't they give 'em what they want to make 'em happy?

Sometimes what children want isn't what's best for them. Parents want what's best for their children. It's that sort of love. For instance - if a child has a tantrum about wanting sweeties instead of dinner, a parent wouldn't give in and allow them to have what they want. They need nourishment from proper food. D'you understand?

What they should be and what they are isn't always the same. But they should love, care for and support you where they can. Teach you the difference between right and wrong, how to be and treat others, and how to live on your own in the world.

If they can't be what they should, what happens?

Well it depends. We're all a product of our environments to an extent. The way we're raised is always a part of who we become no matter how far we rise above it.

Sometimes the child can be taken away from the parents and placed somewhere that's better for them. Sometimes nothing's done about it.

[oh. this is just the saddest thing. it gives her pause. she knows what parents should be like...but she can't vouch for hers being like that. not her father. and her mother...]

Brave. They should be brave, and fiercely protective of their children. And they should be understanding, too, and accepting and unashamed of what their children are - and love them, above all.

[and they should live forever.]

Everyone makes 'em sound completely different than they are in fairy tales.

What are they like in fairy tales? Absent?

Mean. They abandon the kids in the woods or cook 'em in pots or make 'em work like slaves.

Vicious, biting, raw, and jealous, and possessive and yes, cruel. Every mother is cruel, didn't you hear? Touch a cat's freshly young, it'll eat them whole.
