Surplus, just another way to say you're laid off

Sarasota County has to make drastic budget cuts. In one of the recent elections people voted to pay less taxes on their houses, which in turn took a lot of money away from the schools. Several positions are being cut and down-sized. Because Florida is a union state, everything is based on seniority and not skill. Since I am low woman on the totem ( Read more... )

It so strange how education is a field where no matter how good you are, you can lose your job. People complain all the time about how horrible education is in America, well this is part of the reason why in my opinion.

How are things? Are you gaming? Our group fell apart. =(

The lucky thing for him in the Bay Area is that there are SO MANY groups of committed gamers. And harlequinaide has a good rep. I think he has an embarrassment of riches for gaming. Lucky bastard.

Agh, that BLOWS! Especially since you're such an awesome teacher and so dedicated to the job.

I think that saying ought to be amended to 'You don't go into teaching for the money, bullshit politics, insane coworkers, abusive and belligerent parents, emotional storms of children and young adults, incompetent superiors, horrible cafeteria food, standardized testing drama or shabby resources because taxpayers don't understand how their money is used. You go into it because you love it.'

That is so true. The cafeteria food part made me laugh. Our cafeteria is run by Nazis. They don't tell you how much money you have in your account. If you run out they literally take your tray of food out of your hands and throw it into the garbage. Even if you swear you have money in your classroom. At least they hand the kids a PBJ sandwich if they are out of money. But it is so humiliating!

Man, I'm so sorry.

Also, this is a big issue with the education system from the bottom to the top. I think it's why, at the college level, tenure is being eroded in favor of adjuncts. If an adjunct is terrible, you can fire them.

I feel like there should be a system somewhere in between - with some job security, but where you rise based on merit and not merely based on length of service.

I'm so sorry. I tried to get everyone I knew to go and vote against 1 for just the reason's you mentioned. Charlie Christ is a jackass for trying to say it wouldn't affect schools at all. We've already had someplace over here get so strapped for cash that they are going to have to start charging for firemen. Oh I'm sorry your house burned down, if you'd have paid a little more on your property tax we would have been able to afford the firehoses to put it out.

People are dumb. Good luck with the job situation.
