~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nii pads down the silent hallways, plotting, planning, scheming. Out of the corner of his eye he catches the moon through the window, shining, unhindered by clouds.
It is nights like this that take Nii back to the past; back to another place, another self.
Nii, no, Ukoku, remembers bright moons and dark clouds. He remembers sake and conversation. But most of all, he remembers lips, warm and pliant under his own. Pliant, but never yielding, never submissive, for Koumyou was balanced in all things. It was Ukoku who was thrown off guard, though he never dared show it. He hid his fear underneath passion. For every doubt, he gave a kiss, every question, a caress. He hid the doubt until it left him, buried too deep to be found.
He wonders if Koumyou knew, if he saw the doubt in Ukoku’s heart. Probably, as there was little you could hide from Koumyou. Koumyou knew things about Ukoku that were better left as secrets. Ukoku reminds himself that such men are better dead. He tells himself that he doesn’t dream of sake flavored lips, or white skin glowing in the moonlight. Ukoku tells himself that he doesn’t miss the past, and he almost believes it.
Ukoku watches as clouds roll in and cover the moon, devouring its light. Then Ukoku fades away, obscured just as the moon was. Nii shakes his head and chuckles. There are things to do and questions to answer. He walks away and doesn’t look back.
koumyou/ukoku, saiyuki
