1. Smash has been a letdown, to say the least. Vulture is posting some utterly amazing and laugh-aloud recaps that rank up there with TWoP's heyday. Especially the stuff about Anjelica Huston as an immortal dark priestess.

2. Tomorrow night I'm going alone to a midnight screening at a theater that's not exactly the safest part of town, and I ( Read more... )

Those fake movie posters made me think about how certain design choices are so associated with a particular director. I don't think I was that conscious of it before.

Huh. That's a really good point. The EW designer got the artistic styles down perfectly. :)

I have several mini prints of '60s Italian movie posters above my TV. I almost want to blow up the HG one (heh -- one of the posters is of Blow-Up) and add it to the wall.

. It's gotten to the point that I barely click on EW.com anymore because it's just turned into a Hollywood pander machine that can be downright embarrassing to read.

Good. I'm not the only one thinking, "How much did they get paid to write this?", every time I visit the website. I can't take any of their opinions seriously anymore. It's all sucking up.

Oddly, at the same time, the writing in the magazine seems to have gotten better. At least I'm really enjoying the longer interviews they've been publishing.

I agree. The magazine does have problems with flogging something they think is "hot" -- I'm surprised they haven't done more HG covers -- but overall it's pretty good. The website is ridiculous, though. All those "exclusive clips!" and thinly-veiled press releases just make me uncomfortable. They have some decent staff writers who deserve better than Tiger Beat-style click bait.

Sister & I saw the last HP movie at Atlantic Station. It was full of other moviegoers and thus perfectly safe. Park in the garage nearest the theater, and you'll be fine. You'll be surrounded by other HG fans all the way. :)

Yup, turns out I was surrounded by other HG fans -- Regal was showing it at midnight on 13 screens! Quite a good, safe experience. I was also pleased to discover that, despite it being another YA series that Hollywood is treating like another HG or Twilight, the crowd was actually full of people in their 20s and 30s -- and the audience looked to be evenly split between women and men. Nice to see that it had such crossover appeal, especially for a movie centered on a strong young woman!

Why not take a cab? Arrange for a time ahead of time and they pick up up from the door and deliver you safe to your door. There must be late-night cabs for bar-goers no? Just be safe because you're right, you can't pull an arrow out of your quiver like Kara or Katniss!

I watch Switched at Birth! (Though not last night's yet.) And yes, it does remind me of Huge. I like that both shows give you a window into another world. With Huge it was weightloss camp and with SaB, it's the deaf community. I do think they get that right. Sometimes. I love Emmett but it has been becoming All About Emmett lately. The girls were switched! But sometimes I find myself worrying about Simone. But you know me, I always worry about the troublemakers. :-)

Alas, a taxi would've cost me around $50 round-trip! Fortunately, the theater turned out to be quite safe. No worries at all.

I adore Switched at Birth! I won't presume to know anything about the deaf community, but I've skimmed the TWoP board, where those who are part of the community give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up. I like that the show is so respectful and doesn't pander to the hearing audience, such as having entire conversations in silence with subtitles (a lesser show would have those characters voice the dialogue aloud or just skip that altogether. And I agree about Emmett, who was just a bit too perfect -- another great sign is that the writers were unafraid to have him do some pretty awful things in the last few episodes. And yeah, I like Simone. I was quite intrigued by how she suddenly seemed to be genuinely remorseful during the basketball game (I suspect she deliberately fouled Daphne), but they never went anywhere with that. Alas!
