Last day of school! And I need to start planning my summer. Each year, my district offers tons of staff development classes, most of which are unappetizing. But this time I'm very intrigued by four introductory foreign-language courses. They're scheduled for Monday-Thursday of the first two weeks in June, from 9am-2pm daily. I'd earn five PDUs, and ( Read more... )

I suggest Portuguese mostly because it's my native language (LOL) and because Chinese and Arabic are just too different and you'd have to learn a different writing system. Not that you would have time to do it in such a short course, but still...*shrugs*

I picked Arabic, because you're excited about it and it's not a tonal language. But if you want to build on the Spanish you already have, I'd say Portuguese. :) It's free - pick something you otherwise wouldn't take a chance on! :) Excitement creates energy, and can take you unexpected places. Have fun!

안녕하세요!

I agree with everyone who says that if you are going to start a language it should be one you really feel passionate about because - ugg, language learning is mostly a lot of work. :) Also, unless you want to learn Korean so you can watch Kdramas in original languages, I'd say you probably don't need to take that one? I've been living in Seoul for the past 4 months, and have picked enough functional Korean to get around, but it is certainly a place you can travel without knowing too much language. And the alphabet is really easy to learn on your own too, if you wanted to do that much.

Do you have 10 years? If so, study Chinese. If not, I'd suggest going in a different direction. Like Portuguese.

I took Arabic for my college foreign language requirement and loved it. It was so much fun, and also quite straightforward. It's one of those languages where you learn the rules and there are very few exceptions. I highly recommend it, especially if it's one of the ones you're really interested in!
