Be sure to put a sense of humor in at least one of the bags - patience is another must - and the ability to refocus between looking at the big picture and the little picture as each in turn becomes overwhelming. Most important of all is to always remember that you have family and good friends standing by to do anything to help.

Start rehab NOW. Look at the exercises and those that won't cause him pain now he should DO now...I wish I'd started leg lifts before surgery. Look up leg lifts...he can start getting those muscles into shape now.

Also get those using-the-walker muscles in shape now. Ask him to make a sandwich while using a walker, and bring it to the living room. It'll force his arms/back to get used to the strength and balance needed with a walker. Much easier now than after surgery.

Try a few stairs. Learn to negotiate them now. (No, I'm not asking him to climb stairs. I'm asking him to learn to negotiate a few up or down steps/curbs withe the walker.)

and finally, he's going to need a whole new vocabulary when he meets his physical therapists. You know the vocabulary...the one that makes sailers blush!

Good luck, Hon!
