A Little Freak In Us All

The morning of Christmas Day was bright and sunny. A thick blanket of snow, newly sparkling, was snuggly wrapped around the English countryside and The Burrow. Within the slightly lopsided and patched together building, sleepy parents were being roused by an army of little redheads.

The Burrow had been set with many engorgement charms the night before, making room for four families under one roof. Little ones ran wild with excitement to and fro between the enlarged bedrooms, trying to make the day start faster. Harry Potter had barely managed to get his glasses on, as he stumbled into the hallway, dragged by two messy haired boys and a stumbling little girl.

“ Daaad come on!” they whined tugging at his hands to go faster. Managing to make it down the stairs and scoop up the little girl without major incident, he watched the two boys zoom into the den, before turning to the kitchen table.

“ Happy Christmas,” a sleepy Hermione sat at the table, levitating a battered and mismatched tea tray to the table before her. Harry managed to give her a yawn in return accepting his floating mug and taking a grateful sip. Lily snuggled into his shoulder closing her eyes sleepily.

“ Rose and Hugo?” He asked just as the eager chatter from the living room began signaling that his monsters were not alone. Hermione wrapped her hands around her mug looking content and smiling at Lily in Harry’s arms.

“ I take it Ginny loves her sleep just as much as Ron?” She asked as he slipped into the seat across from her, shifting Lily to his lap.

“ Probably more,” he grinned and turned, watching Mrs. Weasley trundle down the stairs, wrapped in a robe and looking completely excited about having a full house to make eggs for and children to watch pull on knitted jumpers again. Mr. Weasley followed her quickly, a sparkle in his eyes that could only mean that his presents were homemade and probably dangerous as well.

Happy Christmases chorused around the kitchen, Hermione moved to help Mrs. Weasley with the feast and Mr. Weasley moved into the den with the children after relieving Harry of Lily.

“ Ah-ah, no opening them. We have to wait for everyone to get up and knowing my sons, and daughter it may be a while. There you are, open your stocking if you’re so impatient, Santa should have left you something to keep you occupied…” Mr. Weasley supervised and assisted in the opening of stockings, oohing and ahhing in all the right places.

“ UP! ZIS IS NOT FAIR FOR ZE CHILDREN! RONALD!” Harry winced, noting Fleur was awake, that probably meant that Victoire and Bill weren’t far off either.

Ron’s grunt and sleepy yell was barely audible, but the loud snicker from Hermione in the kitchen made Harry grin all the same. Some things never changed really. Harry moved over to the den, watching the smallest children unwrapping chocolates and playing with their mini gifts. He laughed seeing James jump around trying to catch the play snitch Harry’d gotten him. Rose had just gasped in delight at a small novel she’d found in her stocking when Harry was attacked from the side.

“ Happy Christmas Uncle Harry!” Victoire beamed up at him powerfully for a moment before moving out of her hug and on, having already gotten everyone in the kitchen. Bill appeared a moment later herded down the stairs with Ron and Ginny following him. Fleur descended last, looking bright and beautiful as always giving him a peck on the cheek and a murmured word about Weasleys and their sleep before sweeping into the den. Bill followed in a bit of a daze while Ron shuffled with his eyes barely open into the kitchen rubbing his obviously empty stomach.

Harry shook his head grinning at his ever the same friend before watching Ginny stomp over to him in an annoyed manner. He raised his eyebrows rather used to this expression by now.

“ I swear she still thinks I’m sixteen. Honestly, like I’d sleep the day away if I didn’t have her there to wake me up. I’m going to strangle Bill one day, just you wait,” she hissed crossing her arms even as he pulling his arm around her shoulders.

“ I know, you very nearly did last Christmas, remember the dress episode?” He grinned watching her face flush with embarrassed furry.

“ It’s like you want me to kill her,” She looked up at him curiously and he shrugged.

“ I may or may not have made a bet with your brother.” He said, looking away and back into the Den where the kids were forming a semicircle around the fairy lit evergreen tree.

“ What bet and which brother?” Ginny’s question was drown out by the children’s yells if they could open presents yet. Mr. Weasley was just about to allow them when Harry stepped in.

“ Teddy’s not down yet,” He looked around the rooming meaningfully. Victoire jumped up.

“ I’ll get him,” she grinned and raced off up the stairs before anyone could relieve her of her duty.

“ Right, that’s settled. What bet?” Ginny poked him hard in the chest and he grinned innocently back at her.

Victoire rounded the last flight of stairs and silently opened Teddy’s door. She wanted to wake him up properly, by jumping on his head, not by simply walking into the room. Frowning at his unmade and empty bed, she looked further inside, finding the -today green haired- boy huddled by the window watching the snowfall. Walking casually up to him, she was surprised to find he hadn’t heard her, even when she was right beside him.

Grinning widely, she swung her strawberry blonde hair over her shoulder and raised her hands. Moving quickly she gave him a giant shove preparing to cackle with glee but only feeling a cold and empty shock fill her as he tumbled, changing shape rapidly, shrinking a bit, his hair fading into a mousy brown and his face becoming a bit more plain, his nose bigger, his eyes a warm amber.

She stood in shock, looking down at him like that for a moment before in a blink he was back to what she usually saw. His face was pinched in a scowl. “ What do you want?” he gathered up the blanket he had had around him shoulders and threw it onto the bed, picking himself up as he did it.

“ I had to wake you up, we want to open presents.” She whispered still in awe of the odd change she’d just seen take place.

“ I don’t care, open them without me!” he yelled shoving her toward the door, “ Get out!” he snarled turning his back on her.

“ But, Uncle Harry said-“

“ Harry doesn’t care either, just go Victoire,” he hissed menacingly his hair turning a darker green. She chewed her lip, standing in the doorway with her hand on the knob for a while.

“ What was that Teddy? What happened when I shoved you?” She asked in awe still of the completely different boy she’d seen just then.

“ It was nothing! You just shocked me and a lost con- I thought I told you to go!” he whipped around staring her down.

“ Control? Control of what you look like? So that’s what you really look like?” she wasn’t afraid any more and advanced on him rapidly, excitement clear in her eyes.

“ No-yes-I don’t know! Just go away!” he scowled trying to end the conversation but she was too quick for him darting around him and getting in his way.

“ But you have to know, it’s not like you can loose who you are or something,” She flipped her hair back again staring him down even as she was, several inches shorter than him. He muttered darkly something about not knowing and moved back to the window. She’d never seen him look so sullen, so serious.“ You don’t understand, you’re too young,” he said flippantly running his hand through his hair turning it a teal colour she thought suited him quite nicely.

“ Too young? Teddy, I’m only two years younger than you. Just forget I saw that okay? Come open presents,” she gestured to the door, realizing maybe, just maybe this was one subject she shouldn’t be pushing at.

“ No, I can’t,” He clutched the windowsill and Victoire rolled her eyes, now was not the time for dramatics. “ Do you want me to get Uncle Harry?” she offered as well as threatened. Teddy looked over his shoulder at her his eyes flashing amber again. She swallowed hard. “ You did it again, your eyes,” she whispered taking another step towards him as his shoulders tensed even more.

“ I can’t stop it anymore, I’m losing control, what if, what if I’m like him, after all?” he asked quietly, Victoire wondered who he was talking about. Taking another step she froze as he spun about again.

“ He was a werewolf Victoire! A werewolf! My father…my old father, he was…the same age as Harry’s. I just, I can’t be like him, I can’t,” he clenched his fists and crossed his arms.

“But, it’s not that bad. You didn’t get the Lycanthropy from him…you got Metamorphmagi from your mom instead! And your mom loved your dad…I’m sure you would have loved him too, Teddy!” she nodded brightly sure that she was cheering him up. He shook his head and pressed his eyes closed.

“ You don’t understand, I’m not a wizard with ‘special talents’ I’m …a freak.” He whispered, striking a strong chord within her heart.

“ I don’t understand? I don’t understand?” she hissed feeling her hair starting to raise up she was getting angry, fear locked into place, he couldn’t see her angry, “ My father was attacked by a werewolf too! I’ve got it too! And my mom, my mom is a Veela! I’m not even a whole human!” she screeched her voice taking on that raspy quality her mother seemed to adopt every time dad did something she didn’t like. Victoire was rapidly having flashbacks, her parents fighting, her mother’s magic whipping around the house her voice unrecognizable, he skin taking on that rough green pallor.

Teddy turned to look at her and she knew it was too late, he saw it too. She knew it was the same for her, the same effects, the same of everything and shame burned through her as his eyes widened in discovery. Feeling normalcy return to her she shook her hair out of her eyes and pushed a hard breath out her nose.

“ You’re right though, Teddy, I probably wouldn’t understand would I?” she turned to leave but was caught by a hand on her arm. Turning she saw the boy with sandy brown hair and amber eyes was holding her back.

“ I’m afraid,” he said and she smiled sadly.

“ So am I,” she took his hand from her arm and slipped it into her own tugging him out of the room.

“ And Teddy? Don’t change today, just be you, I like it, and I think everyone else will too,” she smiled and he tentatively returned it, following her down the stairs to the shouts of their anxious family and the mixed reaction too their newly formed companionship.
