Internet Epiphany

It occured to me last night when I was sitting at the internet cafe with Tails on FB, that the internet and social networking sites are almost completely 100% bullshit. Like I was reading peoples status updates about how "awesome" Download was, and half the people who said it were complete jobbers who stayed in their tents half the time, never even ( Read more... )

I think the 'omg download was amazing' thing is just pack mentality. I have no doubt everyone enjoyed it but as soon as one person posted on FB about how amazing it was it opened the flood gates. You went against the grain, quite a ballsy move there :-P

In relation to the online thing, I think you are possibly reading too much in to it. It's just the nature these days for updates and communication to be done through those sites. There is one kicking about between me, Kat, Deego and Mick where one person commented the other regarding Saturday night and the other 2 joined in. You wouldn't get that in 1 to 1 contact.

Oh and please text, I prefer texts to phone calls :-P

Maybe I am being too hard on FB. I completely agree that it can be good for just letting a large group of people know something at once without having to individually phone everyone. Like a "who wants to go to the pub tonight" FB status update is a hellova lot easier than calling everyone and asking. And yeah fair enough to the group talking thing too. I just get frustrated by the lack of communication between people sometimes. It always seems to be online or when at the pub when people are drinking. People don't seem to just talk anymore. I can't remember the last time you and I just talked. Not online. Must have been months ago. But then again talking online is better than not talking at all!! Fosho.

I'm SO going to phone you :P

I get what you mean, but think about it...we haven't 'talked' frequently in years. Since I left school we have went through the odd long phases of not seeing each other. We keep in touch via text and online but very rarely are we in a situation where we can just shoot the shit ( ... )

"Want strange looks? Walk about today with a jacket on, I did it at lunch so I
could put my ipod in the inside pocket. Might as well have had a sign saying 'I have leprosy' around my neck!"

Why couldn't you say this to people in work?

Kinda with Puggs, I don't think the problem lies with the Networking sites themselves, it's how we use them that maybe isn't so good..
Like, I rarely use the likes of Bebo, Facebook or LJ for posts, but i'm always on reading other peoples thoughts, or seeing what they've been up to. So its good for that. I stopped running around with you lot a few years back, not intentionally, I just never have enough money to come out, and just make a knob of myself when I do, :P but i'm on almost everyday checking out what people have been up to.
Plus, it's always good if you feel like a wee moan when there's nobody in particular you want to vent to :P

I think that's why I'm much more accepting of livejournal. It's because people actually take time to write their entries and you get a better insight into what people are thinking and doing with their lives. It seems more genuine than most. But maybe I'm just biased.
I never see Nikki or Lyndsey or youself but it's always nice to get a wee update. As opposed to just a FB "I'm going out to get pished tonight" update. That doesn't really tell you anything :P I suppose different sites are designed for different uses.

If I'm the Lyndsey you're talking about then now I feel bad cos I never update this haha. My last post was like....weeks ago, and even at that it read something like "nothing to update on *sigh*" or some crap like that ( ... )

Sorry for spelling your name wrong! Yeah I was talking about you. But just to confuse things then me and Kate started talking about a different Lyndsey too! Lol. Yeah I think I was too hard on FB. It defo is a great way to keep in touch with people I just get irked by some people. I think I should blame the people not the site! Lol. I've had to hide a good few people on FB because they've annoyed me so goddamn much on it!!

Dude you just totally summed up why I hate social networking sites. But then I'm pretty biased seeing as everyone knows I'm a reclusive hermit who couldn't socialise in any capacity if my life depended on it ^_^ I don't even really do LJ very well and it's practically retro now. I do like hearing what all you folks are up to though ( ... )

Yeah I felt like that the first 2 years I went to Download. Some bits were tough but I look back and smile at it because it really was a fantastic experience. But this year it just felt like a watered down repeat of what I had already experienced. It never really hit me until me and Taylor were looking at DL photos on FB and she said "All the Download photos are the same and you can barely tell the years apart" She hit the nail on the head. Even all my photos where pretty much the same as previous years!
Gutted I never got any photos of the gazebo tho! That was really funny, and it is weird that you heard it off lyndsey first! Small world :p lol.

Download was seriously awesome, as is Facebook. I dont know about others, but I know when I post something its not just to show off or make others jealous. Its just a fun way to keep in touch and involve everyone.

I havent even heard of this 'Black Death' but if you think its shite it must actually rival the Black Death itself.

Oh come on, so you've never posted anything purely for a little sympathy?

And btw I'm not saying everyone does everything I was ranting about. And I'm not pretending to be holyer than thou either. I just get frustrated sometimes at the way people communicate and felt the need to share it.

As far as I was aware, when told about Download by half the people we went with, it wasn't really about the bands, more about the atmosphere and the banter, the bands were just a bonus. That's the thing that put me off going for so long. I finally caved in and went and after years of it being built up as this huge deal, I was left with a really bitter taste in my mouth. I loved the company and the bands I got to see were awesome, but I spent a shitload of cash to do something we all could have done down feckin Inverkip or something.

Yeah I think there was just way too much build up this year, and with the big number of people going everyone expected it to be really amazing. It wasn't bad, but disappointing to be sure, especially as you pointed out, with the amount of money spent...like 150 for a ticket, 50 on camping supplies another 50 on carry out, 50 on the bus, then all the spending money actually down there....arg...now that I'm actually adding it up it's making me feelt even worse!!
