My reaction to the Presidential Election

Nov 05, 2008 09:59

Last night was an amazing night. Despite my lack of love for McCain, I must say that he gave a gracious concession speech and did a good job at attempting to calm his disgusting and ungracious crowd of supporters. However, I believe that America made the right choice. President (elect) Obama's acceptance speech, if nothing else, reminded us that ( Read more... )

What us "little guys" can do to make this country a better place: Care. Care about the direction the country is going. Care about how your neighbor and your community is doing. Care about what is happening to the economy, the ecology, the world. The majority of us showed our caring last night in what we hope is electing the right guy to lead us in our caring.

I think you should sleep with me more. That'd be a major contribution to making the country a better place. Like, totally. ;)

I was rather disgusted by the booing when McCain said that he had called to congratulate Obama.

But at least we should have an interesting 4-8 years of his presidency...

like Mom said, first step is caring. you and mike are intelligent people who always are informed about the issues going on around you, so you're already ahead of most Americans. I think the next step is to make a conscious effort every day. whether it's in your actions, words, thoughts. . .every day think about what you could be doing; how your thoughts and words are powerful and can influence others if you form them just right. make a daily effort to do at least one good deed for the earth or another person; stranger or not ( ... )

Good idea on the group swap, though I can't remember the last time I bought clothes (want to lose weight first, so it has been/will be a while)... Cleaning up a park is a good idea. And yes, I guess I could come up with some on my own, but what I was going for with this post was to find specific ideas for what you would do and what you think I should do.

i've done food pantries, food not bombs, resource center for non-violence. . .i'd definitely recommend food pantries because they usually get the short end of the resource stick and have been especially hard hit thanks to the recession. npr just reported a week or two ago on a food pantry here in Cal that had been completely empty for almost a week. . . plus you have a college out there, right? crash some of the guest speaker events, those are always fun and informing =)

I'd thought about a food pantry, but couldn't find any available info. I'm sure there's got to be one around here though. I also found a place where you can pen pal with kids online to discuss educational books, host a book-drive and be a "friendly visitor" in senior homes. Figured those would be a good start.

Don't wear rose colored glasses with this candidate like so many of my kind did with Bush. That's the most important thing.

Agreed. Which is why we all need to take our own steps to do our part. I'm still a little lost on how I can make the biggest impact with my own limited resources.
