In my house, my brother and I loved sci-fi together. Our friends did too. We were a couple of nerdy homebodies, but friends who were down loved sci-fi as well.
Now, I still dislike fandom, but I'm willing to engage with specific fans regarding sci-fi/fantasy and tropes because, well, because I'm that important to me. I <3 this post. And I'm going to read and reread it. Because yes, and yes, and yes.
And yes.
I loved DS9 when I realized an empire was going down. I loved Voyager for having the Maquis. But assimilation and acculturation on certain terms seems to always shake down one specific way. It gets antsy.
There's a novel I love, fanfic, the Talking Stick Circle* by Macedon and Peg. Within that braided novel is one particular section that nailed me right between the eyes by showing me my hatred of so-called troublemakers. But stories like that are few and far between. Every creative act counts and fanfiction matters because it's about hearts, dreams, yearnings and inner realities ( ... )

I'm still bitter it took Sisko so damn long to be promoted to captain. Umm, the man secured the only known stable wormhole for the Federation; isn't that worth something, Star Fleet?

Uhm... there'd be a lot of alien babies? Uhm no, I mean there'd be a lot of dramatic close calls? Wait, what do I mean? That's positive?
Taking Benjamin's role as the Emmisary aside and how that helped or hindered his progress, I think Kirk would have pissed Kira off, and the Bajoran Government. And perhaps the whole storyline would be about how everyone else was trying to save the Galaxy while Kirk wined and dined the Cardassians.
