In Austria, a woman (Benita Ferrero-Waldner) ran for office at the most recent presidential election campaign (it was in 2004). It was the first time a woman ran for office, and she believed she would win since she was one of 2 serious candidates, the other one being a man, as more than 50 % of the Austrian population are female. But she lost, which was a great disappointment for her. I remember seeing in the media that the day after the elections, she was at a meeting of European foreign ministers (she was the foreign minister of Austria at that time) and cried, and other female foreign ministers consoled her. However, short after the lost election she became the European Union's Commissioner for foreign affairs, which is also an outstanding position. Anyway, she blamed the "leftist women's libbers" for her defeat (she herself is conservative, the candidate who won the election is a social democrat). barack obama is amazing and everyone needs to vote for him. he didn't come out of nowhere, he's been getting a huge amount of publicitty for at least the past 3 years because he's the only black senator in office and he's also really progressive and awesome.
