[Well it's. Nice to hear an apology and a thank you. Not that Jim understands why, he's pretty convinced you hated him and Hiccup for holding you back. So his end of the comm is quiet for a while.]

... Long as you're okay.

[BOY FRAAAAAAN Sokka's been worried about you, he's just been... busy.

Yeah.

Busy.

He sounds... not cheerful, but at least lighter-hearted when he speaks.]

I mean, I have been worse.

Better to be down an ear than an arm, I always say!

[.....cricket chirp...,]

Someone put guns on the flower deck.

You're better off not hearing it.

Wait, guns, what?

[Staring at his communicator, what, really?]

You know, the hot metal hail?

[It took her long enough to figure out what they're called, but it's not like he could forget the stuff that took off his arm right?]

[FLINCH.

THANK YOU, TOPH. Thank you. He really wanted to think about those right now.

He's definitely rubbing at that scar while he replies.]

Oooh, man. Wait, wait, wait, hold on-- they're on the flower deck? Why?

[Think think think. They do mostly live on the same Deck, don't they? Weird. They should move Toph down with them.]

[And by the by. She does feel bad that there isn't anything she can do for you, big brother. She's a healer, yet she can't do snuff. It's disheartening.]

I'm fine, here. Hows your ear doing? [Besides, y'know. Being useless.]

Well, hey, if we want to look on the positive side, aaat least it's not hurting anymore.

[But he is still deaf.]

I... would really prefer to not go see that thing ever, ever again.

Ever.

[Just so we're clear.]

[Audio] I can't even come up with a reply to that... that was kind of brilliant withanokka November 18 2010, 15:14:22 UTC
I hear that.

[Sokka laughs a little bit, in spite of himself.]

Does that mean you sleep nearly as much as I do?

Your Equilibrioception is off?

[What did you do, stab yourself with a pipe cleaner?]

I know how to construct a prosthesis for it- it's not too complex a mechanism, just delicate. You'll need a surgeon to put it in; I guess that kind of specialty is rare....

What happened?

[Sokka blinks at the word. It's not a term he's familiar with, sorry, Kimiko.]

....uh. Yes, that.

[Beat.]

Wait, wait, a prosthesis-- like a peg leg or something for my ear? Well, I mean, obviously not a peg leg, what good would that do me, but-- how does that even work?

....yes....like...a peg leg.

[Neanderthals, the lot of you.]

It's a fluid gyroscope with internal kinetic touch-sensors. Oil-based blends seem to work best, for some reason, but my prototypes used water and it functioned alright as a proof-of-concept but I'm not sure if I can reconcile progress for the sake of progress with practical limitations on internally consistent long-term prosthesis in this case. I've got reservations about consolidating that kind of arrogance in design with prototypical result patterns.

You just use batch-selection to recode the sensory-output relays into nerve-compatible patterns; this is a lot easier if you already have a neural jack, but it's clearly not impossible. I mean, the decode test-pattern has been pretty well known for a decade now, I could probably determine the correct sequence for your aural nerves, presuming that whatever messed you up in the first place didn't damage that as well.
