Being a rather unknown series there aren’t any information sites for Ann Cassandra. The entire manga can be found here.

The basic premise of the manga revolves around the myth of Cassandra of Troy, a Greek Queen who was granted the ability prophesize the future at the cost of never having her predictions believed. She predicted a great war but was ignored and would eventually be captured by the enemy. With her dying breath, she cursed anyone who would not believe in the predictions.

Centuries later her tomb was dug up by raiders and her remains were made into a mask. The mask became filled with her hatred for the world and would come to possess its own magic abilities. Whoever wore the mask would be until control of Cassandra and its powers would be used to destroy the world.

The mask’s power was so great that it began to affect humans by giving them the ability to predict the disasters it caused. Because a small part of the population could see the future caused by Cassandra, a seal mask was created to combat it. The seal became passed down the generations of a family of clairvoyants, which is the blood line Chiasa comes from.
Because the mask doesn’t want to be destroyed, it would use its power to try to murder anyone who held the seal. This power would leave Chiasa as the only living member of her family and, despite being just a child, would make her responsible for saving the world.

Chiasa, whose own clairvoyance was manifested through headaches, would end up in Tokyo during her search for the Cassandra Mask. There she would meet Bekku and Banjou, a team of clairvoyants who dedicated themselves to breaking their predictions. After numerous near death experiences, the ‘prediction breakers’ would begin to travel with Chiasa, both to protect her and ensure that she was able to complete her mission.

After a year of traveling together, the threesome finally makes it to the town the Cassandra Mask is in. This is Chiasa’s pull point, the gang standing over the city and trying to decide what to do next.

Personality:

Chiasa is best described as a child who moved too fast into adulthood. She’s spent the majority of her life living from accident to accident, watching countless people die, and having the weight of the world pressing down on her. Because of the things she’s seen and had to deal with in life, she tries to act like she’s someone who is mature enough to deal with it. She looks down on being treated like a child and tells others she doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. Chiasa is very verbal on her ‘views’ of other people. Not only does she not need them, but people are expendable in completing her goal. She claims to hold the position of sacrifice the few for the many. These things couldn’t be further from the truth.

Everything she claims to stand for is easily disproven just by looking at her actions in the story. Most noticeably are her views of sacrifice. After verbalizing this view to Banjou, he immediately tells her she’s wrong. The three companions had been in an accident less than an hour earlier in which pedestrians had been involved. Chiasa’s reaction wasn’t of indifference; she began to panic and expressed horror at the injured children. The first thing she began to say was that it wasn’t her fault and she quickly removed herself from anywhere crowded. While it seems to be the motto of her family to do everything to save the majority and care less about those who get caught up in their fight, it’s obvious Chiasa hasn’t come to terms with this. She doesn’t want to see people hurt or die like her family. This shows itself in that she tries to stay away from large groups of people and in her early interactions with the ‘prediction breakers’. The first time they want to help her, she tries to get them to leave her. She knows they could get seriously hurt or killed if they associate with her and though she realizes they could greatly help her in the battle, she explicitly states she doesn’t want to watch them die.

In juxtaposition to her protectiveness of humanity, she doesn’t deny the chance to be close to another person. It doesn’t take long for the ‘prediction breakers’ to convince her that they should be allowed to come along. After they go out of their way and risk their lives to protect her, and still show her kindness, she can’t refuse. While Chiasa does insist on remaining the holder of the seal which means she is still the target and the others can leave at anytime, she does nothing within the year of being with them to get them to leave. She cries her problems and fears to Banjou, though this is after much work on his part, and lets Bekku coddle her. It becomes clear over their journey she’s began to make them her family, something she’s never truly had.

This brings me to the next big part of Chiasa, her need for a loving family. The only interact with her family we get to see is her watching her brother die. However in the story she tells Banjou about her parents in such a way that suggests they both died early in her life. What she says also shows she’s been completely raised on the run. Her family could be the most loving people in the world, but it’s clear that the lifestyle they lived didn’t allow for Chiasa to be able to understand or feel that love. It’s also clear that because of what she has seen, she doesn’t feel like she deserves it. She struggles with her want of affection and her feelings of inadequacy. However, due to her age any amount of pushing past her thin barriers makes her open up to the one doing the pushing.

Chiasa is a character who struggles a lot with her duty and her own fears . After much prodding she admits to Banjou that she’s afraid of dying and afraid of going after Cassandra. She’s only going after the mask to make sure family’s deaths were not in vain and her fear of other people getting hurt. Later in the story she tries to confront the mask herself but backs down and returns to the group. She then openly admits to Bekku that she’s afraid. Her fear of pain, of loosing people, and of her own mortality is present in everything she does. She’s incredibly cautious, knowing that even the smallest thing could trigger a huge accident and prone to fits of tears when she can’t think of a good way out of the situation. In fact, she’s a character who is often on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

To touch more on that fear of others getting hurt, Chiasa has the is fear for two major reasons. One, already talked about, is her want to protect others. The other is guilt. She doesn’t want to feel responsible for the death of someone else. Watching someone she doesn’t know get hurt fills the girl with pain and she can’t deal with loosing someone she actually may care about. Her guilt is a subject continuously brought up over the course of the series. She’s guilty for getting the duo involved in her quest and she’s haunted by the guilt of people who were hurt by her inability to stay away from disaster. Later in the story, she confronts the mask by isn’t strong enough to win a fight against it. This leads to Bekku getting caught. Chiasa’s resulting guilt follows her through the rest of the story and becomes her motivating factor to confront her fear of the mask.

As stated above, Chiasa often acts as someone ready to break at every hint of trouble. While this makes her, to her chagrin, look weak it’s to be expected. She’s lived her entire life having to look for signs of death. Her powers don’t tell her what’s happening; just that something is going to happen. She has to be sharp, always looking for clues, all the while suffering debilitating migraines. The girl is neurotic because it’s her only means of survival. Because of this, her lack of maturity, and her fears, Chiasa can’t manage her stress. It builds up until she can no longer take it and then she breaks down. She’s only able to break out of it by having someone else force her to keep going.

Chiasa also reacts strongly to be treated as a kid. She hates not having her way, or being talked down to. Since she’s much shorter than her companions they tend to hold conversations literally over her head. She usually just makes faces at this and tries to win back their attention. Very often her ideas are put off as too silly or childish and this makes her angry. While she’ll sometimes start yelling if the situation is bad enough or the things said to her cut deeply enough, she often exhibits her angry by walking away and giving off the silent treatment. However, it was proven time and again in the story her mad spells are usually short lived. Chiasa doesn’t hold a grudge for long unless the grievance is over someone being seriously hurt.

There are other, less shown aspects to Chiasa. She is shown to be a genuinely happy and helpful person when removed from the Cassandra situation. She enjoys watching Banjou and Bekku bicker, and enjoys having light, playful conversations with Bekku. She gets attracted to cute, feminine things and as many teenagers, can be persuaded by junk food. She shows distaste for ‘roughing’ it and despite needing to be on the run, continuously wears very girly and hardly battle appropriate clothing.

When she starts to care about someone, then she’s attached for life. Any show of kindness towards her is met with loyalty and love from her. She’s so deep in her need to be cared for and validated, that when people are willing to be with her, she reacts with affection. The few people who are willing to help her, whether they disagree with her motives or not, are able to gain all of her respect. This is most exemplified in how she treats Banjou. Though they have differing views on life and he berates her on her faults, she holds him on a pedestal for his protection of her.

In short, Chiasa is a person of many nearly contradicting layers. She wants to live out these mature, brave ideals but keeps getting held back by her own childishness and needs. She wants to be free of people, not out of coldness but out of a want to protect them. At the same time she wants to know the love and companionship she’s missed out on. She knows she has to complete this impossible task that requires courage, but she really wants someone to prove she isn’t in it alone. There’s a direct contrast by the things she thinks she has to be and what she is. She just wants to be shown its okay to fall short of her own expectations and to just be a kid.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:

Loyalty- When some proves to be kind to her, she sticks with them for long haul. All favors done for her are met with her undying trust and respect.

Courage- Despite her fears, she continues her dangerous journey. She might cry and have fits, but she never strays from her objective. She looks death in face and cries. But then she gets up and keeps fighting.

Determination- As stated above, Chiasa just doesn’t give up. If she has to do something, she might not do it with grace, but the job will get done.

Working through the pain- Chiasa lives with near constant migraines but still manages to think and act clearly.

Cautiousness- She’s seen how very simple things can trigger death and is always on the lookout for danger

Agility- She’s very good at dodging things like falling buildings and flying cars.
Can make do with little- She’s lived her life on the road with little to no money, no means of making money and little food. She’s learned how to ration and how to make the most of practically nothing.

Weaknesses:

Immaturity- Though she tries to act like she’s an adult, Chiasa very much reacts to things childishly and often lets that immaturity get her into trouble

Fear- Chiasa often lets her fears get the better of her. She gets paralyzed by the thoughts of death, and when confronted with problems she often panics instead of facing them.

Physical Exertion- Chiasa’s might be able to pull of crazy feats of agility but after one or two she’s completely tuckered out. She also can only run in short bursts

Physical Strength- Chiasa has all the strength you would expect for a 13 year old living on the run and with a minimal fast food diet would have. Which is very, very little.

Family Life- Growing up in the situation she did with detached, and later dead, parents has caused her to be downtrodden and stunned her emotional growth

Easily Manipulated- All it takes is someone showing her ‘love’ and she’s with them for life. If the wrong kinds of people do this, it’s likely she’d be willing to do what they want without ever realizing what she’s doing is wrong.

First Person Sample:

[She posts this in voice, trying to cover the fact she’s so young and improve the chance of being taken seriously. Despite this the voice is quite obviously a young girl, and is edged with the sort of shaking that takes over when someone’s scared.]

That was not my mother.

I don’t know what kind of kidnapping attempt this is or who that lady’s working with, but you should know there are people out there who’ll come looking for me. They’re probably on their way here right now. You won’t get away with this.

And give me back my bag! I’ve got important things in there. [A pause, and then quickly.] Not valuable. Just important to me.

Third Person Sample:

Having the Psyduck follow her around had taught Chiasa on important lessen; being around someone with chronic migraines was annoying. It made her all the more grateful to Bekku and Banjou for putting up with her near constant whining during their trip. Unfortunately, Chiasa didn’t share that patience and kept turning to glare down at the little yellow creature. She couldn’t bring herself to yell at him. She herself had lived far too long with the constant pain and she knew how distracting it was. That also why she couldn’t bear to put him back in the ball. Or at least that’s what she was telling herself.

In truth, after a year of always being with the terrible twosome, she didn’t want to be alone. The thought of going off on a big journey, even without the threat of the mask, disturbed her. She had a taste of companionship, though she didn’t know her standing with the rest of the group, and now that she was without it she felt alone. So even if the creature was kind of annoying and couldn’t speak any language she knew, if he was willing to follow her she’d let him.

She looked back where it had stopped, clutching his head. Chiasa waited a moment, and then snidely told him to hurry up. When it didn’t she sighed, swallowed her annoyance, and backed up.
“I get it. It hurts. But you just gotta work through it.” She sighed again and picked it up. “Just keep still. I’ll drop you if you annoy me.”

She wasn’t going to tell the little guy that she didn’t mind having him around or that she understood him or say anything that might make it seem like she actually liked him. And she certainly wasn’t going to let him know yellow was her favorite color. He and everyone else would just have to learn it the hard way.
