Earthquakes and tidal instability. I would almost be inclined to believe the root cause to be tectonic activity at sea, save for the fact that there have been no major tidal waves. Nor should the current rumblings be enough to effect what we see of the ocean.

Perhaps there's a different cause for each?

That is what makes it unnatural in the end. What should be happening aren't, or at least the reasons behind why such things usually occur aren't.
