6 - When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
The characters I prefer to write tend to be male. I think this is borne of two things:
- The male characters in the source material tend to be written more deeply. I'm not great at creating my own characters, so I like characters that already have a lot for me to work with.
- I can't relate to super-feminine characters at all, so it's hard for me to get inside their head to write them. In general I identify more strongly with characters that aren't so overtly gendered, and female characters tend to suffer from that more than male characters.
7 - Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Fic's never made me do a total 180, but it's definitely made boring characters more interesting to me. Apollo Justice is a prime example of that; in the game, I found him a bit dull, but fandom has shown him to be sweet, determined, and charming.
8 - Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
I write OCs if I need a role filled that it doesn't make sense to use a canon character for. I'll use them to facilitate a plot-point or to give a canon character someone to react to/play off of.
There's definitely some of me in the canon characters I write, but I avoid letting myself do that as much as I can with OCs. With canon characters, I think that drawing own your own feelings and experiences can help flesh them out, make them real. OCs, they're not there to be the emotional heart of the story, so I keep them simple.
