The leader of the KKK in the U.S. is really close with a black man, who he also doesn't see as black, "he's different."
Maybe it's like some of the homeophobic people I know who think gay people are evil, but that one over that is their friend is ok because they're their friend.

She said (to paraphrase) that it was quite a common opinion, and that it was prolly the negative stereotypical traits of black people that Ben doesn't like, and because he doesn't see them in you he doesn't consider you black.
