Despite the absence of phone and internet, paradoxically I feel more connected than usual. End of Aug. migrations took the rest of my small, close flock of girlfriends from my program at university away, and my friendslist reflects the relocation of many permanant and temporary Vancouver inhabitants. Phoebe, I'm glad you've fallen into the rhythm of the city so well, and I can understand that feeling of 'loss' and 'absence' so much more poignantly here than I ever could at home. I'd like to think of you walking up and down the Drive, occasionally drifting on to Main St. or into Yaletown (oddly, I can't imagine you at UBC, because I don't think that institution is good for your soul...but what do I know ( ... )

hi sang,

the loss of friends, family through distance, is at least, not an irreversible one, and I think it prepares us for later, permanant losses. It's taught me to give people and places my full attention whenever possible. The work we put into those relationships rewards us later. Your comment reads like an entry of its own, and I'm sorry I don't have time to write more. Maybe you're terrified of an inability to cope- focus on what things you can cope with, however small. I find when I stopped thinking about belonging, that's when I felt I did. Maybe take those readings with you outside, to a table that's waiting just for you?

i think it's cool that you feel comfortable in Vancouver. I also understand the feeling as I think I've become a Torontonian in the year that I've been here. It's a good feeling...kind of like the place is now mine...

I'm equally glad to hear you've worked on making Toronto your own. You're always a person I think of as forming ties with her community, however inadvertantly.
