Without Hermione: Mayday

“ Cho!” Harry called out, spotting the Ravenclaw as she darted past in the corridor. She winced visibly but slowed enough for him to catch up to her, “ Look, I’m really sorry about that whole…tea shop…thing,” he stuffed his hands in his pockets, unsure what to do with them otherwise. This all usually went much better in his head, where she was forever smiling beautifully, windswept…not looking completely wrung out and red eyed.

“ It’s alright, Harry,” She shook her head, pulling a face Harry assumed was trying to smile. He grinned back at her, encouraging her to do the same genuinely. His eyes darted to her hand, which had reached up to tuck a lock of her long dark hair behind her ear, and he was suddenly taken with the urge to grab and hold on, to show her that he didn’t like Hermione, but liked her, and was -in fact- just as much of a hand holder as Roger Davies.

“ Right,” he worked for more conversation and came up with nothing but a jumble of hands and confetti and tears, “ So…” He rocked back on his heels feeling like a complete idiot as Cho frowned at him, her eyes glassy again.

“ Don’t you even care?!” Mayday Mayday, she blubbered more than asked and then before he knew it, Harry was being pummeled with her school bag from every direction, “ He’s gone!” she shrieked hysterically, another thwack to his side, “ You don’t care!” a particularly sharp smack to his shoulder.

Maybe girls had too many emotions for him, Harry regrettably thought as he cowered, arms about his head, wand forgotten, and looked longingly to where Malfoy ridiculed him from afar.
