To say that Adam was disappointed that Krista had backed out of having coffee with him would be an understatement. And to say that he wasn’t thinking about her would be wrong.
"Why won’t you go out with me?" Adam yelled as he locked his door behind him. "Fuck!" Yeah, the guy from the coffee shop was cute, but Krista, dayum! That man was just smoking hot. All the way home, he had tried to figure out what he could have done that Krista saw was flirting. He was friendly with the customers for better tips, that’s true, but he was a social guy. There was nothing wrong with being nice. That didn’t mean he was a flirt or couldn’t keep it in his pants.
Out of the shower and lying in bed, Adam was focused on how he could change Krista’s mind when his phone rang. It was really late and he was surprised so he picked it up and saw that it was the same number cute coffee shop guy had called from earlier, Neil. Adam couldn’t help wincing at the name.
He answered the phone, "Hello?"
"Adam, hey, is it too late?"
"No, I work late so I haven’t been home long."
"I know that I just called but could we meet up tomorrow? I’m off from both my jobs and I thought…" Neil went quiet.
"Uh, well…I have rehearsal for a gig I got tomorrow night…" Adam was hesitant because he really wanted Krista, didn’t he? Yeah, he did. "And I sort of have my eye on someone and I don’t want him to think that I’m playing him. I’m sorry for giving you my number but I didn’t think that I had a chance but now I think I might…"
"I see, so this guy, you’re dating him?" Neil asked.
Adam sighed, "No, I wish that I was but he keeps turning me down. He thinks I flirt too much, or so he said."
There was a long pause from Neil. "So, we can’t hang out at all? Not even as friends?"
"Um…"
"I can always use a new friend." Neil said softly.
Adam thought about it for a moment and decided that Neil was right; there was nothing wrong with making a new friend, even if it was a cute one, and Krista had turned him down, again. What did he have to loose. "Alright, you’re right. You can’t have too many friends."
"Good. Let me know when you’re free and we’ll meet up."
The line went dead.
Adam threw the phone onto his nightstand. "If only…" He drifted off to sleep, thoughts of Krista and Neil swirling in his mind until the two seemed inseparable.
Kris looked at his phone, trying to clear his head and think. "What am I doing?" He asked himself out loud. Shaking his head, he put his phone down and headed toward the shower. He turned the water on and as it got hot, took off his cloths. He took a long hard look at himself in the mirror. It shouldn’t matter that Adam was attracted to him and to Krista; they were one and the same, so why was he playing this game?
Stepping into the hot water, he let it sooth his frayed nerves. He admitted to himself then that he wanted Adam. He wanted Adam in his bed and he was almost certain he didn’t care how he got him there, he just needed. He soaped up his cock as thoughts of dark hair and blue eyes consumed him. He stroked himself hard, Adam’s name passing his lips and the tension built. Thoughts of being beneath Adam, his fishnet stockings on, legs wrapped around Adam’s waist, pushed him over the edge and he came hard.
Panting, he finished washing himself off and then stepped out of the shower, shutting off the water and grabbing a towel. He wiped off the mirror and looked at himself. "You’ve got it bad, girl, so damn bad."
He fell into bed and dreamed of Adam’s freckled lips on his.
Kris sat at the outside table of the café, twisting his hands together, thankful they were hidden beneath the table. He was so damn nervous and kept asking himself what the hell he was doing this for. The only thing that he could come up with was, #1) He wanted to know that Adam really did like him and #2) He really liked Adam. The more he thought about it, and turned it over to look at it from all angles, it just seemed so wrong. But he had to know! He had to know if he and Adam had chemistry, if they could even get along and if Adam truly wasn’t playing him, but really wanted to get to know him. Of course the fact that he was lying to Adam, in a sense, he pushed to the back of his mind. The fact that Adam had no idea that he was indeed, Krista, shouldn’t matter, he had convinced himself. There would be time later to explain all of this once he found out what he needed to know.
He lifted his eyes and saw Adam smiling at him. His breath caught in his throat and he swallowed hard. He pushed some of his nervousness down and put on his best smile.
"Hey, you made it."
Adam sat down across from him. "Yeah, I was worried that I wouldn’t but I did."
The waiter came to take their order and Adam smile at the younger man. Kris couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. Once the waiter left, Adam smiled at Kris.
"So, rehearsal went well?" Kris asked, taking a drink of his coffee.
"Yes, it did. I think I’m going to like this job…"
As Adam talked away about the new show he was in and all the cool people that he had met there, Kris watched his eyes, his mouth, and the way that Adam used his hands when he talked. He sipped his coffee and licked his lips, wanting more than anything to feel Adam’s mouth pressed against his.
Adam stopped talking and chatted when the waiter brought their food and was startled when he was asked, "So Neil, tell me a little about you. I’ve just chatted away and you haven’t said hardly anything."
Kris smiled behind his sandwich. "Well, you know that I work in a coffee shop."
Adam nodded, "But you said yesterday that you were off from both of you jobs. What’s your other one?"
Kris stalled with his cup half-way to his mouth.
Adam smiled at him encouragingly.
"Uh, I’m into performing."
Adam’s eyes lit up, "You mean like music? Ohmgod, really?"
Kris cleared his throat, "Yeah, sort of. I mean I play guitar and sing a little but that’s not…"
Adam interrupted him, "No way? Holy shit!"
Kris wiggled in his chair, uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation and decided to change it. "So tell me about this man you have your eye on."
Adam’s face turned a tinge of pink. Kris couldn’t help but think it completely sexy to see Adam blush.
"Well, we work at the same place. He’s sexy as hell and…" Adam blushed deepened.
"And?" Kris prodded.
"Well, Neil, how opened minded are you?"
Kris laughed, "I’m gay, live in LA, how open minded do you think I am?"
Adam returned the laughter, "Point taken. He’s a drag queen and I’ve flirted with him for weeks now and nothing. Gorg, just beautiful on stage. I can’t figure out why she won’t go out with me. Krista practically runs from me every time I approach her."
Kris had to take a drink of coffee so he didn’t choke on the bit of sandwich in his mouth. "She runs from you?"
Adam nodded. "I’m not a bad looking guy and I’m really nice but she thinks I flirt with everyone." Adam made a face, "I mean, I’m not a bad looking guy, right?"
Kris’ eyes got wide, and he shook his head, "No, you’re a nice looking man, Adam. And how do you know that she thinks you’re flirty?"
"She told me herself. Krista had agreed to go out with me for coffee and then backed out. She said that I flirt with everyone. I just don’t think she’s into me at all."
Kris felt something seize up in his chest at the dejected look on Adam’s face. It made it worse knowing that it was because of him. And Adam didn’t even know. Here Adam was, spilling his guts to the very guy that he wanted to go out with and Adam didn’t even know. Guilt rushed through him and his face heated up. He looked away from Adam, trying to hide the look in his eyes. He never had been accused of having a poker face and he wanted to hide his shame.
"Neil? What’s wrong?" Adam’s voice was of full of immediate concern.
It made it that much worse for Kris to hear that caring tone and tears sprung to his eyes. He felt like a baby and he wanted to run away.
"Neil?"
Kris felt trapped, trapped by his omissions and trapped by the fact that Adam seemed to genuinely care that he was upset, just as Adam seemed to care for Krista. He jumped up and hurried toward the bathroom inside the café leaving a stunned Adam sitting alone.
Adam sat there shocked at how fast Neil had gotten up and left. He relaxed a little when he saw that Neil was going into the café and headed in the direction of the bathroom. What in the world had he said that had gotten that kind of reaction out of Neil? He thought about it for a minute and his eyes widened. He had been talking about Krista and maybe Neil thought this was a date? Oh shit, he had hurt the guy’s feelings.
Adam went over the conversation they had been having thus far and shook his head at himself. The way Neil was looking at him, how persistent he had been in getting him to come out and have a late dinner tonight, how Neil didn’t say much but just listened and all he had done was talk about another guy. Another guy who wouldn’t give him the time of day; who wouldn’t even go out for coffee with him.
"What the hell am I thinking?" Adam asked himself out loud. He was surprised when he got an answer.
"You talk to yourself a lot?" Neil was standing beside the table looking down at him quizzically.
"Ah, yeah, sometimes, when I’m being stupid." He took a breath, let it out and started talking a mile a minute. "Listen, I’m sorry for going on and on like that. I realized that I hadn’t given you any time to talk at all and here I am sitting a mooning over some guy who won’t give me the time of day, while I’m having dinner with this super cute guy; that’s you by the way; and I’m talking about someone else and I hurt your feelings and I’m really sorry." He took another breath, "But I did tell you I was interested in someone but I guess it doesn’t matter." Adam looked up quickly, "Not that you’re anyone’s second choice, of course!" His face heated up, he felt like a fool.
Neil stood there looking at him like he had lost his mind, and maybe he had. "Are you finished?"
Adam swallowed again, "Yeah." He couldn’t meet Neil’s eyes and looked down at the table.
He felt Neil sit and sneaked a look at him through his bangs and eye lashes. Neil was smiling.
"Adam, I think we need to talk about some things." Neil’s face changed he appeared to be nervous.
"Okay, but I am sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings and…"
Neil interrupted him, "Adam, you didn’t hurt my feelings. I’ve not been completely honest with you about something…"
Adam jumped in, "I know, I get it. You wanted this to be a date and here I’ve been running on about…"
"Adam!" Neil put a bit of force behind the word causing people to look at them.
Adam shut up, waiting to see what Neil would say next.
Neil opened his mouth to continue speaking when Adam’s phone rang.
"Sorry, sorry, shit!" Adam saw that it was his mother and looked at Neil with worry. "I have to take this, I’m sorry, it’s my mother." Adam stepped away from the table as he answered.
He came back to the table. "I’m sorry Neil, I have to go. Can we continue this some other time?"
Neil sighed but nodded his head, "Sure Adam."
Adam hurried away, waving as he left.
Kris sat there and watched Adam leave. He had been going to tell him who he really was and now he had to work with him tomorrow night as Krista without Adam knowing…again.
How the hell did he get himself into this fucking mess?
