Semi-relatedly, our old VCR bit the dust about 10 years ago, so my brother and I took it apart. Really interesting, even if I had no idea what most of the pieces really did. Got a nice strong magnet out of the deal too. :)

Well, I wasn't specifically thinking about converting all my analog content. I was thinking more along the lines of replacing Grateful Dead show cassettes with Dick's Picks, albums with iTunes,movies with DVDs. But now that you mention it, A-D conversion is a capability I'd like to be able to support for a few more years, anyway.
And Makers love cannibilizing tape machines. Magnets, motors, recording heads. Lots of cool stuff in there.
