Hawkeye prequel - HAWKEYE
Movie Summary
It's just one crappy thing after another in young Clint Barton's life. His father, an abusive alcoholic, kills himself and his wife in a car wreck. Clint's older brother, Barney, is kind of an asshole. The two young boys are sent to an orphanage. It's not a happy place, and after a few years they run away to join the circus. It's a typical lonely child dream to run away, join the circus... they treat you like real family there. They don't beat you, everyone looks after you, and you get to travel and see the world, right?
Well, kind of. The Barton boys are lucky when they're taken in by the Carson Carnival of Travelling Wonders. Among the members of this circus troop are a French national named Jacques Duquesne (The Swordsman) and his rival Buck Chrisholm (Trick Shot). Both of these guys are no good. Duquesne thinks that he's a fancy swashbuckling hero and is a very talented sword fighter. Chrisholm, meanwhile, teaches Clint and Barney how to shoot and the two boys soon master the bow and arrow. Chrisholm has a drinking and gambling problem and Duquesne is very greedy, prone to stealing and embezzling money from the circus.
Still, things are pretty good for a while, but then Clint catches Duquesne in the act. Enraged, the swordsman almost beats the boy to death before he can alert the authorities. It's a brutal scene that reminds Clint all-too-painfully of his father. Once again, betrayed by an authority figure. Barney and Chrisholm stop Duquesne from killing the boy, but the damage is done.
Clint suffers some permanent loss of hearing after the beat down. He leaves the circus, running away once again. Barney is left to be raised by the crooks and will become Trick Shot's new apprentice.
On the run, Clint becomes a thief himself, but catches the attention of SHIELD when they hear witness accounts of the amazing skills in archery. He is captured and brought in to meet Nick Fury. Fury gives Barton a test - to assassinate the dangerous Russian spy Black Widow. Clint wants to do good, he really does... so when it comes down to it, he can't kill her and brings her in alive instead. After all, if SHIELD was willing to give him a chance, why not her? Nick Fury is impressed and the two new SHIELD Agents are trained together as a team where they form a close bond.
Trouble rears its head again, however, when Barney Barton, the new Trick Shot (after Chrisholm dies of cancer) emerges as a villain. He's robbing and assassinating and Hawkeye and Black Widow are sent in to stop him. When Clint realizes it's his brother, he has another moment of doubt. He can't kill Barney... Barney, who fires a shot and wounds Natasha, Barney, who receives an arrow in return, which injures him. He's pissed off at his baby brother now. After all, he saved his life back in the circus, and then he just ran away again. Aren't brothers supposed to stick together? And what's up with this new spy team you're a part of now? Who are you more loyal to, me or them?
Well, them, as it turns out. Hawkeye wins in the final battle and proves himself a loyal SHIELD Agent. It goes to show that no matter how many times life knocks you down, you've gotta get back up and keep fighting.
Fanfiction
Clint looked around in awe his hand gripping Barney’s tighter and tighter as they moved through the mass of people. Barney had promised that things would be better from here. That they’d always be together. They were brothers and that’s what brothers do. They had managed to sneak in, people not paying much attention to two little kids, to watch the show. It was one of the greatest (if not the greatest) memory Clint had.
There was so much going on all at once yet it seemed to be a choreographed dance. One act would start and just as they were finishing the next act would take over. He was so excited trying to take it all in he hadn’t bothered to ask Barney why they were at the circus in the first palace. All too soon everything was over and people were leaving. He automatically grabbed Barney’s hand and didn’t let go. Instead of leaving like Clint thought they were going to his brother went in the opposite direction.
“Barney?” Clint asked knowing his brother would get the entire unasked question why are we going this way aren’t we going to get into trouble?
“We’re joining the circus Clint.” As if it was already done. As if it was that simple. And Clint was all of the sudden so excited to start a new life. There was no way this one could be worse than the one before.

He sat on the roof top looking down. They say you’re a product of your interactions. A sum of all the parts. He had to agree with that. The circus had made him who he was, and for the first couple of years was the perfect family. The family he never had. And now he was perched on this rooftop waiting. Just watching and waiting. He had figured if crime didn’t pay he would have joined the military. He’d make one hell of a good sniper. He smiled at the thought and went back to people watching.
He hadn’t necessarily had a good life but he learned an awful lot of random life skills. He was true to himself and that’s all that mattered. Because deep down he was a good person just trying to make a better life for himself.
