new cocktail post: n-bottle bars

Mar 31, 2013 14:38

Kempy xsavvyx suggested a great idea for a cocktail blog post, which i've just gotten around to posting at barspoon: n-bottle bars.  (Is it useful or desirable to post here when i post there?  I'm never sure, but i thought i'd mention it this time because it's a special sort of post -- not just the usual rambling about some drink with a mediocre photo.. it is useful to post here when you make special posts there. this is also a meta-comment because i commented on your thing but am not sure if you get alerted about it.

Thanks for the note. As it turns out, I do get notified on new disqus comments -- I responded to yours over the weekend. Check it out!

(I think I need to learn more brandy cocktails..)

I only just noticed the double entendre in the title of your blog! I'm gonna go turn in my ex-music-student badge now.

Yeah, it is all about the puns. (That's why it's on tumblr, of all blog sites :P)

Sadly, there's not much actual music/booze crossover in the content..

Yeah, I like the notice here because I don't often check other blogging sites.

The n-bottle bar post was actually really interesting to me, since I would likely fall into that category of people you describe. I wouldn't really stock myself up on alcohol supplies the way you and Philip did, but it's quite helpful to know a reasonable three things to buy on the side. (I also like that your list started with gin, which is obviously my favorite too!)

You do like a good gin cocktail :) I wonder if for you personally, sweet vermouth and Campari would be the right 2 and 3.. I get the sense that you're more into the refreshing citrusy ones rather than the complex herbal ones..

That's partially why I thought the post was intriguing, because I don't really know anything about either of those next two :-) I think your categorization of me is correct, though: I fall very easily for fizzy and lemony. But I'm also one of those people who finds two or three things he likes (at a new restaurant, etc.) and sticks with them forever, so it might be that I haven't tried enough in other categories to say for sure.

I should make you an Americano Maison next time you're over! They're quite popular in France.

Well, I bet your bar doesn't even have Angostura bitters, either :P

I've started making cocktails over the last few months too. This was largely inspired by the pisco sour at one of your cocktail parties. So far my bar is dark run, light rum, vodka, Cointreau, pisco, and bitters. Almost everything I've made involves lime juice. I'm not sure if I like gin. Any suggestions for a +1?

I'm happy to have inspired you! :D

I think I'd recommend maraschino liqueur -- then you can make a Hemingway Daiquiri (more complex and interesting than its namesake (the Daiquiri part, not Hemingway), assuming you are not a grapefruit supertaster) and a Beachcomber (never tried it, but it looks good! 1-1/2 rum, 3/4 lime, 1/2 Cointreau, and a dash of maraschino), among others.

After that, it probably starts to be worthwhile to get another base. How are you on whiskey? Brandy? Maybe I'll try to make you a gin drink you like, next time you're in town :)
