1. The three black lines on her upper lip that earned her name have largely faded. I am ever-so-slightly disappointed; they were a striking mark and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss them. But the mask around her eyes has darkened, making her blaze stand out more. I've never had a blaze-face horse before, and it makes me happy every time I see

Her boldness could indicate she's going to challenge for lead horse someday in the pasture. She's probably still too young right now, but I'd watch for that. As for greys, your vet is full of it. Grey horses can perfectly well go white in the mane first, or simultaneously. My stallion as a yearling grew his mane out white from the roots, so he had a two-toned mane for a while--white roots, black tips. He was white by the time he was five.

I've only had one whose mane stayed dark; she comes from a family with that tendency. The rest have gone grey mostly as a unit.

That's what I thought, too. The vet was saying that when a bay or buckskin grays out, their black manes and tails fade to red and just keep fading until they're an ivory gray, but I knew I'd seen gray horses develop white manes and tails before they'd lightened to white all over.
I LOVE Pooka's pics!!!

Does she have dark ear tips? Does her dorsal stripe seem to extend on into her tail? (http://www.grullablue.com/colors/dun_factor_markings.htm) CAN I HAVE PICTURES? I couldn't find pictures, flipping back. I could just suck. I wanna play the color guessing game!
Horse colors are a side hobby of mine. I bore everyone at the therapy barn by launching into my best guesses as to the pony colors (no one but me cares if we have a splash bay dun).
(I totally care, he's a cute little flashy Shetland!)

Bold, intelligent mares are just so much fun - but like you say, it's soooo important to teach them to respect your personal space!
