Trinity update(s)

May 18, 2014 21:21

1. The three black lines on her upper lip that earned her name have largely faded. I am ever-so-slightly disappointed; they were a striking mark and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss them. But the mask around her eyes has darkened, making her blaze stand out more. I've never had a blaze-face horse before, and it makes me happy every time I see ( Read more... )

Have you thought about getting her DNA tested? That could be cool fot all sorts of reasons. Actual heritage, color, I don't know what else. I wonder how much it costs...

Her boldness could indicate she's going to challenge for lead horse someday in the pasture. She's probably still too young right now, but I'd watch for that. It could go either way--just friendly and pushy and needs to have a leader; or becomes lead mare and will challenge you too. Whatever she becomes, I hope it will blossom into a beautiful relationship with you throughout her life.

I have thought about DNA analysis, but right now it costs more than I paid for the horse, so I have a hard time justifying it. :P I am super curious, though ( ... )

It sounds like your husband is the perfect example for you in the kind of leadership you will need to provide. Once you get used to it, it is not that difficult to provide and will become like second nature to you. I think the hardest part at first will be switching from one style to the other, but I am sure you can manage it.

Trinity sounds amazing. Have you seen a Fjord horse? They're buckskin with a thick black dorsal stripe that goes all the way to the ears, and the mane is white on the outside. It's often roached to show the punk colors. Maybe she's that kind of dun?

As for greys, your vet is full of it. Grey horses can perfectly well go white in the mane first, or simultaneously. My stallion as a yearling grew his mane out white from the roots, so he had a two-toned mane for a while--white roots, black tips. He was white by the time he was five.

I've only had one whose mane stayed dark; she comes from a family with that tendency. The rest have gone grey mostly as a unit.

I do love the coloring of Fjords! The white in her mane is mostly limited to a few scattered hairs, but she changes color so often it's hard to predict what she'll look like in three weeks. :P

That's what I thought, too. The vet was saying that when a bay or buckskin grays out, their black manes and tails fade to red and just keep fading until they're an ivory gray, but I knew I'd seen gray horses develop white manes and tails before they'd lightened to white all over.

I LOVE Pooka's pics!!!

The mane "frosting" can be a dun thing. If she was going to gray, you'd often see it around the eyes first.

Does she have dark ear tips? Does her dorsal stripe seem to extend on into her tail? (http://www.grullablue.com/colors/dun_factor_markings.htm) CAN I HAVE PICTURES? I couldn't find pictures, flipping back. I could just suck. I wanna play the color guessing game!

Horse colors are a side hobby of mine. I bore everyone at the therapy barn by launching into my best guesses as to the pony colors (no one but me cares if we have a splash bay dun).

(I totally care, he's a cute little flashy Shetland!)

*nodnod* I keep looking at her eyes, but it's hard to tell if I'm seeing light buckskin hairs with a sooty mask or dun hairs fading to gray. Really, the hairs right around her eyes are still darkish. And she does have dark ear tips! She has cream colored hairs IN her ears, dark tan outside the ears, and then a black stripe outlining the tips. Her dorsal stripe does blend right into her tail, though right now she has a fuzzy patch of shedding hairs just above her dock. I'll post some recent photos because I would love to hear your opinion! :)

It is SO MUCH FUN to read these updates and I think you're spot-on that her annoying (*g*) qualities now are going to make her a wuuuuuunderful adventure buddy in future. Can't wait to find out! :)

:) Thanks! Yeah, I really hope she'll be the one... I figure, as much as I love my other mustangs, they've proven themselves wildly unsuited to endurance so maybe the fact that she's so very different is a good sign. I just hope she isn't more than I can handle! I feel so out of practice... The other horses were difficult in different ways, but so easy to work with on the ground. She is easy in all the ways that they were not, but she's going to be a pickle on the ground if I don't pay attention! Still, I hope that boldness will translate to forward energy on the trail, and I would not be disappointed if she was a little competitive, too. :P (You're good at riding firecrackers, right? I think I might need you to break her in for me!!)

Trinity sounds wonderful, whatever colour she finally decides on...

Bold, intelligent mares are just so much fun - but like you say, it's soooo important to teach them to respect your personal space!

Thanks! And yes... I look forward to watching her grow into herself and I would love to see her maintain her confidence and spirit - but I am very, very aware of how important it will be to enforce manners! Wish us luck... :P
