.an introduction
This is a fic about lumberjacks, exactly like it says on the tin, and it probably wouldn't need a masterpost except that I thought a sort of glossary might be helpful. Although everything's intended to be pretty accessible to folks with no familiarity with loggersports, and this isn't a serious representation of lumberjack culture at all, there are some terms bandied about that I'm pretty sure aren't in common usage. To ensure maximum enjoyment (or something) I included Youtube videos and things in the original fill over at the kinkmeme. Now I'm putting those things here, and you can peruse them at your leisure. It's educational! Though you should note that I am by no means an expert (I am just a person who grew up in the sticks). Still, feel free to drop questions here! I probably can't answer them!

.the events
Arthur saws single buck. This is an individual event, so-called because it uses a bucking saw. The competition involves making a single cut through a 20-inch diameter log (usually white pine). It's one of the harder disciplines in loggersports. The current record time is 10.78 seconds.

Double buck is like single buck, except there's one person on each end of the saw, which decreases times. World record for this is 4.77 seconds. There is also something called Master's double buck, which is for competitors over fifty.

Eames saws hot saw. This event uses a single-motor, single-cylinder chain saw. There are frequently homemade and run heavier than ordinary chainsaws. Timing starts before the chainsaws are started, and after starting the saw competitors have to make three cuts through a 20-inch diameter log: down, up, and down again. World record time in this event is 5.55 seconds.

Mal and Cobb chop underhand, which involves standing on top of a log and chopping it in two as fast as possible using an axe.

Ariadne's primary event is stock saw, which is similar to hot saw except that all competitors use identical chainsaws. Ariadne also competes in the boom run, which involves running down a string of floating logs, and logrolling, wherein two opponents run on floating logs until one or the other is knocked in the water.

The Wikipedia page about loggersports is here.

The Lumberjack World Championships are in Hayward, Wisconsin every year.

.supplementary material
Chainsaw art is pretty much what it sounds like (which is to say: someone carving sculptures with a chainsaw). Here's a time-lapse of someone making an eagle. You can Google image search for more.

Demolition derbies are pretty common features at county fairs; it basically involves a bunch of barely functional cars running into one another in an arena. The fire department and EMTs are usually on hand. Parts fall off, things catch fire. Last car moving wins.

If you don't know the Monty Python lumberjack song already, I'm sorry.

Stihl is a brand of chainsaw (pronounced like 'steel').

Underdogs/underdoggies are when you push someone on a swing and then run under the swing. This might be something everyone knows, but I'm really not sure, so whatever.

If you finish the fic and are left wanting more, I wrote an in-verse drabble this one time, and then another one that actually comes first in the chronology.
