“Peaceful Easy Feeling” a Firefly ficlet (500 Words)
River was happy and nothing else. Only having one emotion was a pleasure she hadn’t experienced for a long time. They were sitting around in the cargo bay, waiting to spend the credits they’d rightly earned from a (legitimate) job. River did a quick scan of everyone’s mind. She knew she shouldn’t, but she needed to know that it would last just a little bit longer.
She began with her brother, who wasn’t worrying or running through any of the scenarios that had cluttered his mind in the months they were in hiding. He was looking forward to walking around the planet with Kaylee and…River didn’t need to know those things. Dirty boy, that brother of hers.
River didn’t bother checking Kaylee. She was always happy, even if disappointment clouded her spirit at times. Simon and Kaylee were holding hands; their thoughts would be the same.
Inara’s mind only held trace evidence of anger. River was amazed by how often Inara was mad-the result of dissatisfaction gone unchecked for too long. Today, however, Inara was grateful she wouldn’t be piloting her shuttle to a rendezvous with a wealthy client. For now, she was glad to be with the one man she would never allow to hire her.
Mal was thinking of the next job, as he always was, but their stunt on Mr. Universe’s planet had earned them a reputation that kept them steadily employed. There would be no job seeking on this excursion. It was a reward for a job well done and a chance to take Inara for a celebratory dinner that no one else on the crew would be able to make. He’d been planning it for quite some time, and River assured him that she had much to do on planet.
Zoe was calm, which was as close as she ever got to being happy these days. She was thinking of her husband with fondness and without sadness. River smiled at Zoe; a reminder that Wash would always be with the both of them, so long as he was in their thoughts.
Jayne was particularly pleased with his cut which he claimed was for a good night of companionship from a not-so-trained Companion, but which he actually planned to wire to his Ma. His secret was safe with River. Some secrets were worth keeping, so she slipped a couple credits to Jayne asking if his Ma could make her a hat to keep her ears warm. He grunted in response, but he thought that she might look good in a purple hat.
River checked her own mind last, just to be sure, but only found happiness. It was a bit unsettling, all of this happiness, so she turned to Simon and said, “The girl does not like all of this. Needs sex.”
The panic on Simon’s face and brain was enough of a relief from the incessant glee for River to enjoy the moment. She’d save the “just kidding” for later.

I recorded this almost a month ago. It’s about Veronica’s “office” at Neptune High School.

Okay, so it doesn’t look like a lot, and, truthfully, it really isn’t. I had planned to write a couple more songs, but I always feel so self-indulgent giving people songs. I also fail epically at all things graphics, so that’s another reason this post looks so drab.
