Fun times at Meijer

So last night was a GREAT night at Meijer. I can't remember the last time I had such a great night at Meijer. I walk in and can feel the hostility and tension in the air and it immediately puts me on edge. I find out Fratini (the store director's boss) is going to be in again in the morning, bright and early 7AM. So this means that all the returns have to be cleaned out from behind the service desk, sorted into carts, taken back to their departments, and put on the shelves. This is the second time in two days that this has had to be done. It's also going to have to be done tonight, but I've been told it's going to be done before I get in there tonight (more on that in a bit). Well, the service desk people cleaned out the bins behind the service desk by just dumping them into carts. When I looked at the carts I discovered that they weren't really sorted at all, especially given the fact that there were 20 carts of returns and there are only 12 departments or so. And most of these carts weren't even halfway full, if even a quarter. So Susan and I spent my first hour or so there re-sorting all these carts and Jamie started taking them back to their departments. Jamie was pissed because she was putting all the returns away on her own, but Dave was having her do it in order to keep her out of everybody's hair.

So Susan and I finally get to start our normal chores between 12:30 and 1 AM. I head back to get my bags and she starts cleaning the belts. A little before 2 Dave asks me if Luanna and Jamie would be willing to stick around after their shift to help out because it's just Deanna and me for the rest of the night. Not a good sign. Luanna agrees to hang around until 3, while Jamie puts up a fuss but agrees to stay late anyway. Around 3:30 or so Deanna reappears after having disappeared for more than 2 hours and apologizes for leaving me alone for so long. I told her that I'd only been alone for less than half an hour. She asked how long Luanna had stayed, and I told her that she stayed until 3 and Jamie was off somewhere doing a returns cart. She said "She's not doing a return cart." "When did she leave?" "She hasn't left yet." "What's she doing then?" "Getting herself in trouble." Deductive reasoning on my part comes up with "Deanna has been in the LP office as witness to the apprehension of both Susan and Jamie." Big shock on my part. Didn't see that coming, but it explained where Deanna had been for 2+ hours.

So now we're down two cashiers and we have a laundry list of chores left to do. I have put out register and catalina tape, Deanna has to sort out her candy, we have to wipe down the windows in both lobbies and the garden center door so there are no streaks or fingerprints, and we have to finish putting away the five carts of returns sitting in front of the service desk, all supposedly before 7 AM when I'm scheduled to be off. Not to mention that Deanna has two breaks and a lunch to take and I still have a lunch and a break left, and she and I are the only ones there. When 5:30 rolled around and Paige (service team leader) walked in, we still had 3 carts of returns up front and the windows to clean, Deanna with two breaks left, and me with one. Deanna took hers, came back a little after 6, I took one just long enough to take all my stuff to my car, and then we had everything else to do. Deanna went and cleaned the windows as best she could at that point (it was still pretty dark) and I waited for the next cashier arrive so that we could finish the returns.

Well, the next cashier was due in at 6:30, but she didn't get her light on until about 6:45, at which point Deanna and I went back to double check the windows since the sun was up and we could see streaks and fingerprints better. We ended up re-cleaning almost every window in both lobbies and the garden center doors again. We finished that about 7:30, at which point Sean Nash (store director) saw us getting the trash in the hallway ready to take back and he asked us to take down the last four signs that were hanging around the store. They were plastic ones screwed into the fixtures and needed to be taken down and thrown away. So that took Deanna and me another half an hour or so because two of the screws didn't want to come out. I finally ended up breaking the signs off and leaving the screws there. By the time we finished all the returns and clocked out, it was 8:40. Deanna and I both had a to pick up a couple things before we left, so we finally left the store around 9 AM. I get home fifteen minutes later to discover I can't get into my parking lot or garage because they're doing work on the street in front of my building today. I'd forgotten all about it. So now I'm parked over by my clubhouse, which is a full five minute walk from my building. I don't mind that so much except it's so darn hot and humid, and I had all my Meijer stuff with me, and my uniform is not conducive to staying cool. But it also means I have to get up that much earlier in order to get to the bookstore on time tonight. But I'll be able to get back into my garage tomorrow, which is good.

But now it's bedtime. I have to work at the bookstore at 5:30 and I haven't been sleeping well, so I need to get as much as possible. Night y'all!
