“What would you like to drink sir?” Asked the flight attendant.
“Just water, thanks.” I replied.
“So why are you coming to Hanes, Alaska?” Questioned they guy who was sitting next to me.
“Well, I hesitated, I have come to try to attempt to be the first to climb Mt. Zahora.” I answered.
“Hahahahah! A guy like you! Trying to climb that huge mountain! You’ll never make it. A scrawny guy like you.” Answered the “friendly” guy next to me.
I ignored him and gazed out the window. I usually got this kind of thing when I tell people that I am a mountaineer. It bothered me a little because, well, why couldn’t I climb it. Its just because I am small and don’t look capable of conquering a huge mountain. But really, under all the shortness, I am a very strong guy. This will be my first assent if I succeed! No map, or guild line to guide me. I wanted to prove that “a guy like me” could make a first assent of a mountain where many people have died trying to climb it. It would take much skill but I believed I could do it! My partner Rick is more of the stereotypical mountaineer. He was a few rows back from me on the plane. He is tall and handsome, the two qualities that I lacked.
I saw the sun in the window high in the sky as it hovered proudly over the mountains. The clouds were painted delicately across the blue, and snow covered everything with not a speck of green to be seen. Other than rocks, white was the only color visible. Over in the distance I could see Mt. Zahora. It seemed even bigger than I imagined, but I didn’t want fear to get to me. It shined clearly in the sky with its jagged edges and deep crevices along the glacier. Why I wanted to climb this mountain is a mystery now. It was early morning and freshly fallen snow frosted the tops of the rocks and glittered in the sunlight. The Alaskan Mountains, as I have heard, are always one to shine bright in the sky. Mt. Zahora towered over all the mountains and it stood out with its steep cliffs, a beautiful snowcap, and its never-ending snow falls. The other mountains were like little lumps of snow, which made Mt. Zahora seem grand in comparison. The village in which I would be staying in had only a few houses that lay at the bottom of the mountains. The natives, as Rick described them, were very nice people and helped you get to the base camp of Mt. Zahora. That would be a great help! You could see the Amahar glacier as it curled around the mountains, which made it seem like a never-ending road. It ended at Mt.Zahora and it climbed 1/4 of the way up the colossal mountain.
“The plane will be landing soon. Please put your seats in the upright position. Thank you for flying Alaskan Air Lines,” announced the flight attendant.
