Title: Subtlety
Length: 907 words
Author:
wobaozhewoRating: PG (Fanservice)
Genre: Crack? IDK.
Summary: Fanservice is not Kangin’s forte. Apparently.
Author’s Note: ninja!Kangteuk/SiHan. Heechul/Taemin if ya squint. Mention of NichHo from
that Every1 Idol episode.
Ryeowook was sitting on the couch, not doing anything in particular other than watching TV.
It was the Every1 Idol 2PM/SHINee special. Nothing too interesting.
Until Minho’s hand flew up to caress Nichkhun’s face.
Ryeowook could only blink furiously with a blank expression. “Wow,” he said, to no one in particular, “That boy knows his fanservice.”
“Don’t we all?” Kangin retorted.
Ryeowook looked back to Kangin leaning against the kitchen counter. He put on a thoughtful expression before replying, “Yeah, I suppose so. But Minho… he’s a natural! Do you remember that MNet special where he was hearting with Taemin? And now this!”
“Psh, it’s always the quiet ones…” Kangin muttered to himself.
Ryeowook raised a brow. “What’d you say, hyung?”
The elder of the two conspicuously cleared his throat-only causing more odd looks-“I said, he probably isn’t naturally that good.”
“Oh,” the other frowned, “I wonder who taught him then, if he’s not a natural talent.”
Their attention flew back to the television as Nichkhun asked Minho if he had a girlfriend.
“My girlfriend is hyung,” Minho answered smoothly. Hoots and hollers and shocked gasps all around.
Kangin stared at the TV, not knowing when his jaw would snap back shut. “Did he jus-No… Yes, he-“ He stopped trying.
“Natural. No doubt,” Ryeowook nodded.
“Whoa~!”
The 50 person studio audience cheered ceaselessly for Hankyung’s impromptu solo demonstration of one of his traditional Chinese dances that no one ever seemed to tire of.
The rest of Super Junior sat off to the side and cheered with the crowd, if not more rowdily.
If it was possible, the cheering became even more boisterous when he finished and Siwon walked over to join him on the stage.
A well-placed arm around the shoulder, and a well-timed congratulatory whisper brought fangirl screams of joy.
Ryeowook, who happened to be sitting behind Kangin, whispered, “Naturals.”
Kangin only scoffed. “I could do so much better,” he mumbled.
“Why’d you do that!?” yelled Eeteuk, once they were back at their dorm. “Our fanservice doesn’t work like that! We’re not Heechul! We don’t flail our lips around like the rest of them! We hug! We make hearts! Are you even listening!?”
Kangin only sulked guiltily at the kitchen table as Super Junior’s leader lectured him.
On the show, the topic of conversation had moved swiftly from the brotherly!SiHan spazzing to the new album to Heechul’s girl hair to the last Super Show in ChengDu, which lead to some nudging, and which somehow lead to Eeteuk and Yesung giving an encore performance of their duet from the concert-“Love Really Hurts.”
A beautifully touching performance, really.
Until Kangin rushed over when the segment was over and forcefully kissed Eeteuk-on the cheek, of course-shocking the nation and their mothers.
Luckily, they were able to play it off as platonic (sort of) and the crowd and their imaginations went absolutely wild.
“The fanboards are going to go crazy! Now we won’t be just the Umma/Appa anymore. THEY’RE GONNA WRITE SMUT ABOUT US! SMUT, KANGIN! SMUT! ARE YOU HAPPY!? THERE’S GOING TO BE KANGTEUK SMUT!”
“Did someone say smut!?” cried Heechul from the other room. “Taemin’s visiting soon! You should show me so I can show him!”
“ARE YOU CRAZY!? NO!” Eeteuk flailed out of the room in frustration.
Ryeowook walked over to pat Kangin on the back. “It’s okay, hyung. Not everyone can be a natural.”
Kangin groaned in frustration and collapsed into his arms on the table.
“You want to know the secret to fanservice, hyung?”
Kangin looked up from his schedule for a moment.
“Pbbft, I’m over it,” he retorted and proceeded to continue what he was doing.
“Subtlety, hyung,” he continued, ignoring Kangin’s blatant shun, “You’re missing subtlety,” Ryeowook said, very matter-of-factly. “The fanservice is all about being subtle!” He grinned.
“What are you talking about, Wook?” Because Kangin was very subtle. He was the master of subtle. He was subtle AWESOME. Or just really loud, can’t-hear-you-over-my-awesome awesome. … Is that what subtle meant?
“Like, that action could be couple-like but then could not. No one knows, but the fans have fun wondering!”
Oh. THAT kind of subtle.
“Which member of Super Junior would you like to be, other than yourself, of course?” the host asked.
“Why would I want to be anyone else? I’m Korea’s Number One Handsome Guy!” Kangin playfully replied, but still sounding slightly offended.
Everyone laughed.
Kangin wondered if he would be able to pull this off. Subtle. Subtle. Subtle.
He sighed dramatically and said, “Well, I guess if I really had to choose… Ryeowook.”
“Me?” stated the mildly surprised dongsaeng, who happened to sit right next to him.
“Yeah, I like your face,” he explained. “You look like a gentle, sweet idol-unlike me, who intimidates people.”
“Hyung! You’re not intimidating. A lot of fans agree that you’re really sweet! Maybe more than me!” he replied.
Kangin only answered, “Well, I’d still want to try being you.” He grinned.
Ryeowook smiled in that way that made his cheekbones sharper and his eyes disappear. He leaned in closer to his hyung, putting his hands on the elder’s arm and shoulder. “Thanks, hyung.”
Some squeals sounded from the audience.
“What a sweet moment!” the host proclaimed as he motioned for everyone to be moved.
Kangin leaned over even closer to Ryeowook and whispered, “Is that subtle enough?”
Ryeowook put on a wide smile and answered, “A natural.”
