If you chop the sweet potatoes into cubes and put it in first you can avoid the cauliflower getting all mushy...
You can use cauliflower as a mashed potatoes substitute. Just steam it, then put it in a blender or food processor with garlic, a little milk, fresh or dried chives...that's about it :)
You can also make a delicious peanut dressing and put it on cauliflower and broccoli with chinese noodles and lettuce for a fun salad :)

Since you are a far more adventurous cook than I am, and your spouse is way far more adventurous than your father, it's nice to see you making tasty speculations. It's been a fun thing for me to watch how many more recipes there are for various cauliflower concoctions than there used to me.

the key is to not overcook cauliflower otherwise it really becomes foul and mushy and horribly reminiscent of the Atkins diet (low-carb mashed cauliflower "potatoes" is quite possibly one of the nastiest culinary conceptions EVER).
they like to be steamed with little tiny baby squashes like patty pan and crooknecks; i feel like the flavors really complement each other and once lemon is put in the whole mix its like HEAVEN ON EARTH. for real.
best of luck!
