Oh good---I feel better. You wouldn't believe how often I find myself thinking 'did I just make that up?' Curse of the history professor perhaps? The students certainly assume we make it all up!

I've noticed this bridal gown trend as well. I'm positive there's an etiquette rule that *guests* should not wear strapless dresses to the church without a jacket to cover the shoulders. I've never heard it applied specifically to the bride, but I think it was expected that the bride's shoulders would be covered.

Aha---yes, it would seem rather bold shall we say for guests to come so 'disrobed'! Though Wonder Woman might get a pass :)

Oh---and somewhat off-topic, though I suppose it might fall in the category of 'women wearing the wrong clothes,' have you seen the promotional ads in various magazines for Billy Piper in "Secret Diary of a Call Girl"? Every time I see the pics (usually of her in nothing but a sheet!) I think that somewhere the Doctor has stone cold passed out and Donna wonders what the hell is wrong with him...Roooooooseeee, how could you???? ;)

When I was a child it was taboo to have bare shoulders in church. In summer we had to wear little boleros over our sundresses.

It's distressingly common. Modesty is now considered quaint.

Me? I think it looks incredibly common, and that's not a good thing. While I would never insist on chin-high collars, a wedding dress should not look like what you're planning on wearing later that evening. Good taste has died a quick, ugly death at weddings, I'm afraid. Even among people you think would know better.
