2. Marched in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Yes it was!!! Our 'big event'; pretty much the highlight of high school.

Favorite story...we pulled up in the bus outside of the Broadway theater where The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was playing. All it actually said on the marquee, however, was "Whorehouse." And someone on the bus yelled "Look at that ya'll---up here they advertise!!!!!"

The first two are quite interesting. Of course, anything with tobacco is interesting to me.

There was always tobacco planted at home until I was in about 8th grade, when my grandfather switche everything over to pine trees and cattle. The smell of tobacco curing in the barns was one I always associated with summer. I stayed with my grandparents a lot, and my grandfather would have to get up every few hours in the night and go outside to make sure the heaters were still running. He would never let me work with his crew (I was very much his baby) but one of our neighbors let me work when I was about 7-8 for two days. I came home so dirty that my grandmother ordered the experiment in child labor ended; she said it cost more to wash me than I was making! But I'm glad I did it; I have a whole respect for what people have to do 'on the land' that I wouldn't have otherwise, because its different when you're coddled and just watching it.
