What a wallow

Feb 20, 2012 18:14

I have spent this weekend in a wallow of the sort I haven't indulged in for an age, but instead of being a hormonal pity party, I passed through that valley and came out the other side into sheer ridiculous enjoyment of Gothic novels, Jane Austen, and men in well-fitted trousers. (This despite working from home today.)

I have watched:

Persuasion - never seen, LOVED BEYOND THE TELLING, OH MY GOD, when she runs down into the street after the letter and he's there and then when he walks into the party. I cannot.

FOUR AND A HALF versions of Jane Eyre (BBC with Timothy Dalton, Zeffirelli with William Hurt, the Orson Wells version, and the 2011 one) plus listening to part of the audiobook as read by Juliet Stevenson, which was thirty bucks but TOTALLY WELL SPENT) - I love the time BBC adaptation take with the source, and both Dalton and Hurt were excellent, excellent Rochesters. Orson Wells is just... not my thing. But 2011 has an excellent Jane in Mia Wasikowska PLUS Judy Dench AND, having never seen Fassbender in anything (because XFC is still on my watchlist), OH MY GOD, I SEE THE POINT OF THAT, YES I DO. Ditto Jamie Bell, to a lesser extent, largely because he was such a great choice for St. John Rivers and managed to play all the parts of St. John Rivers that make him a difficult man to love. And I liked how they dealt with the timing problem of making the book a movie wherein everything I want to focus on happens in the last half hour, if you adapt it straight.

Two versions of Pride & Prejudice (BBC and Keira Knightly) - the important bits of the mini-series and all of the movie. See above, re: the BBC, and Colin Firth own my heart, but I also now see the point of Mr. Macfadyn.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Twice. Like I need a reason. Harrison Ford plus Sean Connery = casting GENIUS.

Also Emma, Mansfield Park (the recent one, and I still find it a bizarre movie), and Gosford Park.

Seriously, it has been a fabulous, if ridiculous, few days. It's probably for the best that I have to leave the house tomorrow.
