This actually sounds like an episode of Night Court... except the judge evidently didn't attempt any sleight of hand.

lol... how? the lawyers were doing a good enough job on their own!

I meant it sounds like an actual scene in an old episode of the TV show, except the judge was a magician and did some kind of magic trick during it. But it's probably 15-20 years since I saw it, so my memory is suspect.
